So showing the length of my canines here, does anyone else remember the pamphlets GW used to give out for each 2nd edition factiion? They had a short story, some background and gameplay thoughts, and a 1,000pt army list. Orks and SWs, Tyranids and Eldar, everyone had one.

Heck, does anyone still *have* them? I found two of them in an old box recently myself. Im thinking something similar might be great for the game going into and towards 8th edition.

If we're thinking of the same thing, I have still have two - One for the Space Wolves army box they did (Ragnar, Ulrik, Njal, Iron Priest, Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Long Fangs, and Scouts) and one for the Praetorian Imperial Guard Platoon Box (Command Squad, 2 Regular Squads, Heavy Weapons Squad)

They were useful jumping off points for sure. The way they are presenting the rules for each squad/faction in the 8th edition Indices seems pretty close.

I don't remember the pamphlets, but I do remember that in WHFB 4E/5E Army books and in WH40k2E Codexes these were common features.

Typically, these were sample army list to show you how a typical list worked, a little bit of colour text, and thoughts on what the intention/design of the sample army list was all about.

There was in some of the books a mail-order bundle deal where you could just buy the sample army as a complete offer too.

The 2E Space Wolves Codex went further, and even featured a full battle report in it!

It's funny really, but when I go back through these old books, it seems that they managed to cram so much more into them than later army books managed to.

I still have pamphlets of Orks, White Scars, Eldar and other that right now I don't remember. They were great for that time. I love (and miss) these types of short stories 1st and 2nd Ed used so much.

White Scars, you say? I don't recall that one. Could you post a picture for reference?
