Even the pre-Rise of the Primarch 'traditional' Ultramar - the Ultramar that was solely under the control of the Ultramarines, excluding successors - consisted of "no fewer than eight local systems" (source: C:SM (2015)), which, going off of the map in Rise of the Primarch, include among their planets:

-five Agri Worlds,

-two Hive Worlds,

-two Industrial Worlds,

-two Fortress Worlds,

-one each of Ocean, Civilized, Mining, Garden, Training, Cavern, Death, and Blockaded Feudal Worlds,

-in addition to Macragge herself.

20* worlds of varying habitability and purpose, all included in the traditional domain of the Chapter. Additionally, suitable recruits wouldn't necessarily be just from the harsher worlds - the Ocean World of Talassar, for example, gave us Cato Sicarius of the Second Company.

In addition to the Chapter, the domain of Ultramar maintains "several hundred well-trained auxilia regiments" (C:SM 2015), though it is likely that they are recruited from those who could not be Astartes for one reason or another.

(speculation time!) Given their organizational capabilities, I wouldn't be surprised if genetic lineage screening is common and that Astartes recruits are almost pre-selected at birth, if not 'encouraged' through arranged marriages between suitable genetic candidates.

*note: I excluded certain worlds from the list that the Chapter would not necessarily have jurisdiction over, despite them being within the region controlled by the Chapter - worlds clearly controlled by the Adeptus Mechanicus, Deathwatch, and Ecclesiarchy fall into this category.

Wasn't the jurisdiction of the 500 worlds divided among the successors after the Heresy? Wouldn't that mean a more specific recruitment pool than the whole of Ultramar?

Now that its back to being the 500 worlds, I believe they're gonna get the best recruits from the whole sector.

Thats one hell of a recruitment pool. Literally tens of billions of people to draw from.

"As well as their own defense, the worlds of Ultramar provide recruits for the Ultramarines and it is a source of fierce pride when a family can point to an ancestor who became a Space Marine. In the glory days of the Great Crusade, the worlds surrounding Macragge provided the Ultramarines with hundreds o new recruits, raw materials, and supplies. This tradition has continued to the present day and strong ties have been maintained between Macragge and its surrounding planets. Given the close-knit structure of Ultramar, it is not surprising that many of its worlds share a commonality of language, culture, architecture and governmental styles."

It is also mentioned in a number of books that both the Legion and Chapter recruited from various military barracks from worlds they owned.  I know the Ventris book series is not widely liked on this forum, but in them it mentions how CPT Ventris was recruited through the same barracks program that the Primarch was raised in.

So while the theoretical is that the worlds of Ultramar supply the Chapter.  In practical terms, the candidates are chosen from the military academies throughout Ultramar.

They've always recruited from the 500 Worlds of Ultramar.

Several things this indicates .... first is they can rapidly replenish losses, their recruitment pool is quite large. Secondly whereas most chapters prefer to recruit from Deathworlds or some sort of Hive City crap hole, the Ultramarines have shown you CAN recruit from civilized worlds and develop those recruits into top notch warriors, which is something most chapters do not do. That says a lot about the Ultramarines recruit training process.

The Ultramarine recruitment process includes several written exams and is only open to individuals who have a GPA of >3.5
