Jackalwolf
So guys, I'd really appreciate if you could help me by suggesting a couple of ways I could run a Mastodon. Reason being is I bought one for heresy but I'm much more hyped on 40k at the moment and if I'm going to build it and paint it (I'm super slow), it has to be usable. Currently I don't have much painted but the following is either complete or will be complete soon: - Leman Russ - Wolf-kin of Russ - Wolf Lord - Wolf Priest - Rune Priest - Contemptor Dreadnought with CCW and Chainfist Knowing that it's impossible to use Russ (for now at least), what could I build around the Mastodon to field a 2,000 points and using my HQS (aside from Russ and the wolves, of course)? My only pet peeve is that Thunderwolves are a no go :) Thanks in advance!! Rune Priest Jbickb
I haven't seen the new rules for the mastodon yet as FW is slow to ship. Do you have the rules? Jackalwolf
Just been told around 900 points, really good in terms of dakka and cannot transport primaris. I don't really care about the rules too much since I just really like the model and the concept of a mobile base bunker but Id really need it to be usable in a 2000, 2500 and 3000 points list. Otherwise guess I'll sell it, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/334966-help-me-build-a-list-around-a-mastodon/#findComment-4787599 Share on other sites
Rune Priest Jbickb
Well points helps figure out what there is to work with. At 900 points I would be reluctant to bring it in 2000. As it holds all of your army at tgat point which is a lot of eggs in a basket. But at higher points where you can support it a bit it's probably awesome. Assuming you can still carry dreads then perhaps that's what I would do with it in the lower point games. A pair of dreads rolling up in a mastodon would be cool and decent point wise to conserve some points for support. Blood claws and a wolf priest are also a good low cost unit combo that could be fun. As for support, some predators and maybe an iron priest may be worthwhile. I suspect that as long as you can afford units for it and still have a couple units of grey hunters to grab objectives it'll be worth bringing for sure. erikm
If you're trying to build a battleforged army you're IMO kind of screwed at the moment. Going by http://www.warhammerdigital.com/warhammer-40000/featured/forces-of-the-adeptus-astartes-index.html, the Mastodon is a Relic unit and quite likely a Lord of War. The Relic rule (from same location) reads 'If your army is battle-forged, no Detachment may contain more Relic units than it does non-Relic units in the same battlefield Role.' Which means that you're SOL because there are damn few detachments with more than one LoW slot and you have to take at least one non-Relic LoW, such as a Knight, to make it legal. I see where the rule comes from (Sicaran Spam) but unless it gets patched Relic Lords of War are going to be very rare absent house rules like 'The Relic rule does not apply to LoWs only one per army' See http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/333853-8th-edition-forge-world/page-20 or thereabouts for lots more bickering about this rule. Good luck.
