does MotA allow you to fire any weapon at a unit within 1"?

 

as I read the rule, other than grenades, it offers no exception to the rules for firing only pistols at units within 1"

Unless my eyes are telling me lies, the rule says "one of its ranged weapons, or throw a grenade." That seems to imply any gun the model might possess.

I would agree to this if it didn't give the exception for grenades. that gives it the specific allowance to contradict the rule that you can only fire pistols if a unit is 1" away

The exception is because you throw a grenade *instead* of firing a weapon. Without it, you'd be firing a weapon, not throwing a grenade, even when the grenade would be the better option. And once again, the rule says "one of its ranged weapons." That's a blanket statement.
