I will preface this with the fact I don't know his point cost yet. But he seems really good.

2+ WS/BS, S5, T6, 5W, 2+,4++, Hammer is Sx2, -3, d3 and any unsaved wound spawns a mortal wound on a 4+. His plasma cutter is master crafted and only mortal wounds on a 1 if overcharged not removes the model.

He has the usual blessing of omnissiah and has a 6" bubble of reroll ALL failed to hit rolls for "Sons of Medusa" units.

If he is not too overpriced, this will be perfect for my dreadnought army.

I think it really will depend on his cost. A techmarine and a captain can do the same buffs, with the added benefit of being separate units and thus being able to take more wounds. The high toughness isn't as important as it used to be, in my opinion, since the changes to the wound table. Most things will still be wounding him on 5+ still, so with only 5 wounds those could go fast.

Looks like if I added it up correctly, he is 200 points. A budget Captain and a Techmarine with a servo-harness/Thunder Hammer is around 200 points. I gave the techmarine a thunder hammer to try and replicate the war gear as closely as possible. So four less wounds and four less CC attacks if you compare the two. Vaylund is probably a bit overpriced but I don't think it's that outrageous. I do think his reroll all failed to hits is powerful though. I am probably going to run him with a larger group of dreadnoughts. I forget to mention only M5.

Remember the new keyword system, though.  Counts-as is dead, and I don't feel like ripping all the gauntlet-icons off of my minis and repainting them green.

Though that would be in-keeping with the "piracy" background attributed to the SoM.  So at least it'd be in-character, as it were.  :P

Oh, I'm aware. That's just a very power-gamey thing to do in my mind. Notice I said *I* don't want to repaint everything.

Well it's the best we can do until they grace us with a Stronos model. Taking an ok unit because it's the closest to giving our army ANY flavor is far from gaming the system.

Played a game with him tonight and he was awesome. Had him sit behind the gun line with Whirlwinds and Devastators.

Also anybody have any good ideas on how to make this wonderful model?

In 7th, he was supposed to be modeled on. 40mm base. That isn't a requirement in 8th but you probably would be ok with still doing that. With that said, his wargear and base size line up perfectly with the Ferrus Model. I just use my Ferrus because I haven't started the scenic base yet. Keep in mind too that he is infantry, so you just have to be in cover not true LOS blocking for infantry. So his size wouldn't interfere with that.

Buddy of mine suggested the FW iron father and add appropriate equipment as needed. Ill be trying this out myself.

Fellow Medusans, has anyone else played any games with this bad MF'er?

I've been thinking of adding a small Primaris force to my Iron Hands and Vaylund Cal is looking better and better with the Iron Hands chapter tactics and their warlord trait.
Getting extra swings with that hammer and potentially extra servo arm attacks is pretty awesome.

The plan is to have him escort 2 Redemptor Dreads up the field giving his reroll bubble on their 1's and 2s as they move with the heavy weapons as well as repair them as he goes.

Would love to hear some stories of him smashing face lol

Played a couple games with him so far and boy does he smash face.

As of now he has killed:

7 Khorne Berserkers

3 Thunderwolf Calvary

Wolf Priest

2 Leman Russes

4 Attack Bikes

And others I forget

I have two uses for him. Keep him back in the gunline and support with rerolls and the enemy will typically get close enough for him to charge. The other is run him with a squad of Dreads or a CC squad and let him loose.

Yes he is expensive but as of now he as not fallen. His 4++ and T6 come in handy.

Hey, I built him some months ago after I tried him in a game (still 7th edition) and he was a total blast., here's what I've come up with

So I've played two games with Cal so far, one vs a pretty hard Emperor's Children list with a Fireraptor and a Whirlwind Scorpius and the second vs a suit heavy Tau list.

Rerolling all misses is insane.

My first turn he stays in buff range of my three Autocannon/Las sponson Predators while moving up a bit to also help out the two moving Redemptor dakka dreads. I've been using the Kill Shot stratagem with the Preds and rerolling all misses gives them an amazing alpha strike.

The Dreads are a huge distraction but with his repair they're super beefy. Using a command point in the movement phase for a better roll on the D3 "heal" is great since I'd rarely use it for anything else.

Still haven't gotten him into combat but I love his Master Crafted Plasma Cutter! 3 flat damage is hilarious
