So, I had this idea. Since Chars are now separate from Units, what if we charge a unit in to CC an in effect create a U-shaped space into which a Character walks? If we keep "bodyguarding" the CC this way, possibly pouring more units into the same combat as it goes wider / deeper, to allow the "VIP" to arrive towards a goal (e.g. Warlord / large target for a CC beast)?

I thought of this as an awfully fluffy way of delivering an Emperor's Champion into the depths of an enemy mob, without him being bogged down.

Wrap the space with a Crusader Squad, push back and walk right through. I _think_ it should work, but totally new to 8ed, did not do playtests.

Ideas? Comments?

Could you do some quick photos with models to illustrate? I think I get the idea: that the squad is a like a wave in front of the character?

If the character is within 3" of the front then they could also do Heroic Interventions when necessary, right?

It's pretty obvious vs shooting, but I'm thinking more in the way of "bubble wrapping" the character with units so that he doesn't get involved in combat until I need him to. He's safe from shooting there and he walks towards the Big Thing that needs to be stabbed in the face (enemy Warlord, buff character, monster, etc.).

i would equip the character with jump pack at least to allow it to jump around. With the ruling the fly allows model to move across other models you can possible use it in the pile phase. it has been done in AoS (fly can be used doing charge phase ) so this might be something to think about.

Basically, this is what I had in mind. A Charging Unit bends the red enemy line, makign way for the central aura / beatstick character, with space enough for reinforcements on the Character's flanks, with distance enough that he does not become pulled into the fray.

Maybe I'm missing something but why would this bend the enemy line when the removal of units is up to the other player? Obviously this doesn't negate the tactic given the character can still be behind the unit but I'm just curious.

I've had a bit of a thought on this and I think there are a few ways you can wrap squads together that will make you have to charge several units. This is going to be a very strong tactic if am right that will see units being bunched up as much as possible, and due to no templates anymore there is no down side. I need to do some play testing but imagine having to take 3 lots of overwatch to charge anyone, done with the right units I can see this being a strong counter to cc armies
