How are people's flyers faring in 8th ed? I'm a little disappointed in the way they play. Without firing arcs and not being able to leave the board all I did with mine was fly around in a square shooting whatever I wanted. Don't get me wrong, my Nephilim definitely did some work (that heavy 10 bolter!) but it just felt bland. On top of that having all heavy weapons on something that HAS to move seems silly now.

Also the fluff always has seemed to indicate the Nephilim is our Air Superiority fighter. But it's BS 5+ against other jets so yea.....

And now, unless I misunderstand the new rules, you can fly over a unit and bomb it doing 'about' 5 Mortal wounds, then shoot the 24 Hurricanes Bolter shots and the 1D3 Rift Cannon shots out the back arc at them too.

You are correct sir. This is probably one of my least favorite things about 8th. All vehicles no longer have to line up shots from their weapons. It's LoS from the hull so weapons can basically shoot through themselves at what ever target they want. Facing doesn't matter any more.

I have mixed feelings about this.  For one side it's not "realistic", for the other, no more shenanigans of a single model in front ofa Land Raider can't be shot at. ;)

The weapons are firing while the flyer is moving. It doesn't fire all weapons at the end of the movement. This allows for them to be fired from any arch as the flyer should potentially be able to position itself to fire all weapons as it desires through arial movements.

To me it actually feels more "realistic" for flyers as they can be abstracted to be approaching from a variety of angles as necessary to attack their targets. The only things that bug me are the complete lack of accuracy for most flyers and the fact that a non-hovering flyer can "claim" an objective (though, they forced to move off the next turn representing some of the difficulty in doing so).

Yes, some flyers (such as the Dark Talon) can hover allowing them to stay on objectives. That also makes since to allow them to "claim" an objective while hovering. If a gunship is hovering over an objective and shooting the hell out of anything that comes near, it is effectively holding that objective. By contrast, if a jet flies over head and strafes the unit on the objective, but obviously cannot stop and defend it, that makes less sense to be able to "hold" an objective to me. I understand that they do it to keep it simple as to what can claim objectives, but it bugs me a little.
