+Chaplain Matthias+
I've been making some dull, grimy, and dusty looking black templars but the waterslides are ruining the effect haha Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335451-how-do-you-dull-your-transfers-theyre-so-shiny/ Share on other sites
Captain_Krash
A nice simple solution would be to use a "Dull coat" spray. The company Army Painter has a great "Anti-shine Matt varnish" that will do just that! You could also use Lahmian medium I've found works well too. Just remember 2 thin coats Hope this helps Krash Edited June 22, 2017 by Captain_Krash Doghouse 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335451-how-do-you-dull-your-transfers-theyre-so-shiny/#findComment-4793693 Share on other sites
+Chaplain Matthias+
I have Vallejo thinner medium. Is that the same thing? Captain_Krash
I'm sure that would work as well. Krash Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335451-how-do-you-dull-your-transfers-theyre-so-shiny/#findComment-4793697 Share on other sites
Dantay VI
For me, I gloss varnish, then put the transfer on. Then I seal it with gloss varish. Once dry, I use matte varnish, however if you do not have any, Lahmian medium does a very good job of killing the shiny-ness Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335451-how-do-you-dull-your-transfers-theyre-so-shiny/#findComment-4793698 Share on other sites
E_50_Panzer
Lahmium medium or I watered down nuln oil or suitable shade Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335451-how-do-you-dull-your-transfers-theyre-so-shiny/#findComment-4793715 Share on other sites
+Chaplain Matthias+
Ah so on my test squad, I did the agrax earthshade before the transfers. Maybe I should try doing it after the transfers. I was worried that the wetness of the wash would lift the transfers off the model. Carlson793
As long as you let the decal dry completely after application (and better if you use a setting solution/sealing coat in the process), you can paint over it. Arven_Kar
I just use a thin coat of brushed on "Matt Varnish" from Vallejo, and it does the job for me. I wholly recommend Micro Sol/Micro Set for setting and conforming the decal as well (you will avoid air bubbles, which can make a decal lumpy and give it even more shine than the edges normally have). Some people recommend using a gloss varnish before setting the decal so it has a smoother surface to adhere to (again, less shininess), though I haven't found that necessary. Edit: Oh, one more thing: if you're going for dusty and grimy, you may want to put your decals down before you weather your models. Unweathered decals on weathered surfaces look a bit funny! E_50_Panzer
Oh yeah, if you weather everything like me, make sure you get those transfers on after you finish your base colors!
