I've decided I'm going to change gears from my Astral Claws army for now and work on some Eldar. Whether it will be Craftworld, Ynnari, orCorsairs, I dunno yet, but since I have a lot of Dark Eldar as well, it will probably be one of them that lets me use both. I've been digging out some of the old stuff and found some of my casters.

The upper left one is a limited edition army box Autarch that I was happy to snag off a guy on eBay several years ago who had no idea what he was selling.

And here is what began as a Dire Avenger Exarch for Shadow Wars but will most likely turn into a Corsair. The blade is metal, and yes, the chest looks bad, but this was still a work in progress before me and my friends gave up on the idea of SW and decided to wait for 8th instead.

And just for fun, I bought Fulgrim and one of the FW Avatars to recreate the way the scene in Fulgrim should have really gone with the Avatar strangling that obnoxius diva. Here was an early blocking out test to see how the two models compared in size and if I would need to drastically alter the pose of either.

I'd love to see some Corsairs! They'd give you a lot more freedom to use a wide variety of kits and be more creative with your work. Plus you don't see many Corsair armies around.

With the Fulgrim scene are you going to add a destroyed Wraithlord and Grav-tank...? Maybe you could also recreate the Avatar scene from Aurelian:whistling:

I only read Fulgrim the one time when it first came out and I don't remember everything in that scene, but the enhanced humanoid choking out the molten metal avater of a god with his bare hands (and only suffering mild discomfort) is as fresh and awful as the day I read. I think that was also the day McNeil tumbled from his pedestal for me. Once upon a time it was him and Abnett for me, but I really have cared for anything he's done since then. I didn't read Aurelian because the cover art didn't really inspire any confidence that the Fulgrim atrocity wouldn't be repeated, or worse, one-upped.

The primarch stuff just got ridiculous. Choking out an Avatar of Khaine like it's some punk kid. Being stepped on by a Warhound and it was like he was doing an overhead press in the gym. I'm almost afraid to find out what happened to the other Avatar.

But yes, to get get back on track, a corsair army leaves a lot of room for imagination and conversions and I can't wait to get into it. :D

Yeah, I don't have an issue with a Primarch destroying an Avatar, but punching and throttling one to death is bit much (Fulgrim suffered more than 'mild discomfort' though, and he was aided by the power of the Greater Daemon of Slaanesh in his sword).

The Avatar scene in Aurelian is very different. It's actually quite tragic (in a good way).

Lorgar finds a barely 'alive' Avatar buried in the ruins of a crone world. He essentially puts it out of its misery (it's about as far from a glorious Primarch victory as you can get).

So what is the idea beheind the more massive/voluminous armour? Or does it just look this way?

The armor looks bigger because I didn't do a spectacular job on the chest and I filed down her waist to have room to sculpt a new midsection and that narrow waist contributes to the odd look.

And in finding more treasures news:

The central one actually has a RT pilot. Nice. ^^

But… are you really going to build the probably most ugly models of the Eldar range?

They were the only case where I almost bought the successor models when they came out despite having a full and painted squad just for their look…

But the time you are wasting on them…

And it’s not about old.

You can take an old wraithlord, file the head in shape and he looks OK.

But you can take an old warwalker, give it to your worst enemy and laugh diabolishly while watching him cringe in pain from the look of it.

To be honest, I don't think either version is spectacular, and the way GW did the "cockpit" for the new one by re-using the canopy of the Falcon grav tank family just looks cheap and lame. If I had the money to replace them, I'd go for the Wasps from FW

Errrr, no they didn't?  The plastic ones certainly look better, but they're more evolutionary than revolutionary.  Side-mounted guns, backwards-canted knees, open frontal superstructure (and no canopy doesn't count), the wraithbone "spines" sticking out the top.  Even the feet kept the cloven-hoof look.

I will say that one of my biggest issues with the old walkers that was corrected on the plastic ones is that they hold the weapons sideways because GW used the gun shield from the guardian heavy weapons platform without modification. With the rotary cannon version of the old scatter laser it didn't matter much, but anything else looks odd turned sideways.

I would be glad if i.e. Forgeworld would have been just as ‘evolutionary’ with their titans instead of making even bigger versions of an Eldar guardian.

What you are listing are properties I wouldn’t want a hypothetical ideal warwalker model to lack.

Except that FW based their Eldar titan models on the old Epic titan models?  Those are not new designs, they're just enlarged minis from the 90's.  Seriously, take a look:

Lovely Dire Avenger/Corsair, BCK.

If you're still looking for inspiration on which direction to take things, I wonder if you'd be interested in building a force based around the Alaitoc who appeared in WD138? I'm currently working on an affectionate update of the Blood Angels in WD139, and it'd be lovely to think there's a companion force out there.

The period I've set things in is M35, which is largely unexplored, and thus offers you much more freedom to take your army where you want in terms of aesthetics. It might be an opportunity to convert some of the proto-Dire Avenger style guardians of the period (1991), or the more grounded and realistic scouts, for example:

... and of course, since the period was much 'looser' in background, there's a lot of opportunity to mix up Craftworld eldar, corsairs, pirates, adventurers, dark eldar, and so forth – perhaps even the old 'Ghost warrior' and 'Spirit warrior' proto-wraith concepts. Finally, the older models you've shown above would be particularly appropriate.

No worries if you're not interested, but thought it might appeal. If you are, drop me a line.
