Gorlak
Hello all, Summary: I am trying to decide on a complete paint set between Scale75, Army Painter or Vallejo Game Colour/Air. Context: I have a birthiday coming up and it has been suggested by my wife that I get a complete paint set. I have built up my current collection of paints over the last 20 years from GW, Vallejo Model and Game, Army Painter and Darkstar Molten Metals. I have an air brush and generally only buy Vallejo Game Air paints now, I have about 30 or so now. I've had very good results with Army Painter recently, particularly the red for my Blood Angels, so I've been picking those up too. I've also read that Scale75 paints are pretty amazing, particularly the inks. So, back to the question, if I was to go out now and buy a complete box set of a paint set/range of 100+ paints, what range would get your vote? Thanks for any advice! sockwithaticket
I am increasingly enamoured of Scale 75 and I say that as someone with a collection that's primarily Vallejo. It's worth noting, though, that Scale 75 paints are VERY thick and so need a lot of thinning plus they have a very matte finish. Now I love that about them, but others might not. Gorlak
Thank you for the fast reply! It was the reviews of Scale75 that I was reading today that made me look at getting a complete set. I would definately pick up a thinner with them if I go that way. I do really like how Vallejo have a comprehensive set/system of everything though, that appeals to the collector in me! Imren
It depends, If the primarily use of the paints is airbrushing, it doesn't really matter, you thin the paints down to milk consistency and then you shoot it out of an airbrush straight away barely giving them time to separate, and they all are pretty good airbrush paints as far as I have used them, advantage with Vallejo air range is that they need very little thinning if any at all for airbrushing. If you intend to primarily use them with paintbrush, then its a matter of painting style. If you're a glazer and/or a wet palette user, I'd stay away from Vallejo paints, because they separate so quickly and heavily. For wet palette users and glazers I'd recommend P3, and Coat d'Arms, those barely separate at all, but the pot style bottles can be nuisance sometimes. Also the relatively slow separation of GW paints make them suitable for wet palette and glazing too. I've used metallic Scale 75 paints, and they also separate too much for convenient glazing and "wet paletting", haven't used the Scale 75 flat colours much for glazing. If you're layerer or wet blender it doesn't matter that much since you don't thin them as much as you do when glazing. I'd say that Scale 75 flats and the Vallejo model colours works fine with layering since they are relatively (the others) much thicker and therefore you have a wider span of consistency to choose from when thinning them. So it all boils down to your paint style since they behave a bit different. I'd say get a bottle of each and play with them according to how you usually paint and see which one please you the most before deciding on what whole range to buy. Razblood
There's also the option of Warcolours http://www.warcolours.com They have a very comprehensive range and from what I've heard are similar in use to Scale 75 (I've used Warcolours, but am yet to try Scale 75) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335603-paint-set-scale75-army-painter-or-vallejo-game-colour/#findComment-4800256 Share on other sites

Bedouin2
Like others have said, Scale 75 are great. Their metallics are amazing and the Inktense are very handy as well. I don't use an airbrush, but can say they go on smooth with a brush. I also add agitators in the bottles to help, they are pretty thick but worth the extra effort in the end. Ramell
Scale75 paints work well in an airbrush too, at least with the right thinner.
