Once upon a midnight dreary... Road to Escalation PLog

Recommended Posts

Wat'up hobby nerds and welcome to my Plog

So, the plan is to have completed a new 3k force ready for the Escalation event in Southampton this October.

I have since also signed up the 'First Blood' event the first weekend in September so I know have just 10 weeks to assemble my force, therefore, the plan is now to do at least an hour a day which I will record here. I've found B&C a great place to keep me on track in the past so here goes nothing....

I have chosen The Raven Guard, with a slight twist, adding my own flavour having them set in the shadow wars as a kind of black legion.

The theme, The Wings of Shadow, or "Alas Umbra", thought to have been eliminated on Istavaan 5, they actually managed to escape the atrocities physically, though their psyche remains trapped in the memories of betrayal and the sanity of the Astartes questionable. Though they remain low key on the outer realms of communication, Still loyal to their Primarch, Corax, who uses the Alas Umbra for covert operations unfit for the sane minded, operations that walk the tightrope of morality.

So as to remain incognito due to their own paranoia and Corax's use for them, they maintain a fully operational force off the grid raiding both friendly and enemy positions for resupply or to extract vital intel. Though their methods are questionable, their success is not.

Lead by the strike captain Noxest Lorem, the Wings of Shadow are identifiable by their unique legion markings embodied after their Istavaan escape:

The first Image is commonly found on the shoulder pad whereas the second is used on vehicles or banners.

The 3000pt list currently is as follows:

R.O.W

Decapitation strike

HQ

Strike Captain Noxest Lorem (Maun count as) (cameleoline)

Elites

7 x mor deythan (2 melta, 5 combi plasmelta bomb, rhino with MM)

7 x mor deythan (2 melta, 5 combi plasmelta bomb, rhino with MM)

5 x vets (5 combi melta,, machine killers, rhino with MM)

Troops

15 Tac marines (vexilla,)

15 Tac marines (vexilla, melta bomb, NV )

Fast

10 Dark Fury (melta bomb)

3 x Javelin (MM, Cyclone ML, 2 x Hunter killers each)

Lightning (BSC, GTA, 2 x kraken)

Heavy

Leviathan (pod, melta lance, drill, volkite, A/C)

LOW

Typhon (AC, Lascanons)

I wanted an army with the ability to strike fast, assassinate and pack some weighty firepower that goes against usual Raven Guard etiquette. The Typhon does this and was captured after a re-supply raid on the World Eaters.

1 tac squad serves as a mid-table base to co-ordinate the shells and deepstrikes from with Lorem, while the other can infiltrate on an objective and has a vox too for typhon assistance.

Melta team are to take out and anti-air threats early on or any backfield scorpious. Levi is there to do what it does best, getting into back lines with the main role of taking on armour.

Lightning is the anti sparatan/superheavy - having the flyer re-roll will help here and could also possibly deep strike using the bubble depending opponent.

Javs are harasases and mid-armour although I might decide to swap them out for a storm eagle for the 2nd tac squad to jump on an onbjective late. Unsure yet.

Deythan are there to assasinate primarch and terminators with the plan being to crack all transports open by turn 2, and plasma/typhon all the contents inside.

I am slightly worried about having a lone Typhon in the back field, however the dread or tac squad can also support if need be.

So last week was week 1, and I finished my Mor Deythan:

And managed to get all of my bases made:

Week 2 (this week) the task is tac marines and bases - Get the infantry done first, and then the rest should be easy...

...I hope

Cheers for checking!

Thanks, guys!

NIce! I like the look you have going here! Keep it up! Which hero do you intend to use?

Not sure I follow? Do you mean what model will I use?

How do you get that grey, almost blue, black? Looks nice!

So I just airbrush layers:

Undecoat - mr.surface 1500

base - Vallejo Nato black

Highlight 1 - Vallejo German grey

Highlight 2 - us grey

Highlight 3 - us grey and white

Then a very very thin wash of black followed by 2 coats of satin varnish

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, that didn't go according to plan....

Turns out deciding you would paint an hour a day right at the start of a busy few weeks is not the one. Nevermind, we go again.

Managed an hour yesterday and today getting all the airbrush work done for all the tactical marines so this is a large dent. The aim is to get these and all of my bases finished by the end of the week so just a little bit of brush work on this starting tomorrow as well as undercoating the bases. Pictures from yesterday as today was only a final highlight and wash so not a huge change, just a little brighter in places.

Back on track and feeling pumped! Let's get these Ravens flying!
