Ok I need some advice. I am just getting started in 40k. I have made my first few purchases and want to get started building my army. Below is what I have so far. I have other things I want to buy, but I want to complete what I have already purchased before I spend more money (stacks of unassembled plastic can be daunting as I am sure you all know). The issue is I don't know what weapons/options to build the stuff with.

Start Collecting Space Wolves Set - Not sure if I should build the Wolves as Grey Hunters, or Blood Claws and what weapons to give them. Also, what weapons would be best on the Thunderwolf Cavalry?

Dark Imperium box - So with the Primaris marines I know there are not really any options, but I want to use some of the accessories from the above set to wolf them out. Any advice?

I also have the Shadow War Armageddon box. So I would like to build the 10 scouts from the box as wolf scouts that would work for Armageddon and to play 40k, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

TWC you want storm shields on them so they actually have a chance of living long enough to engage the enemy.

GH/BC do you want an in your face army that wants to melee or stand back and shoot?

I don't have any Primaris and don't plan on fielding them so I can't help you.

In terms of preferring melee or shooting army I have not played enough to know yet. I figure I will need both GH and BC eventually so how would you recommend I do my first 10? I will only be able to play small games for a little while. My next purchases will probably be Bjorn and some Wulfen if that helps.

Bjorn and Wulfen both shine in close combat. That, combined with the fact that Grey Hunters are more versatile than Blood Claws, would make me recommend that you build the Space Wolves in the start collecting box as Grey Hunters. I'd typically recommend a 10 man squad with 2 plasma guns and a Wolf Guard Pack leader armed with a combi-plasma and maybe a CC weapon.

That would be my normal recommendation. However, I don't have any Primaris marines. Seeing as they fill a stay back and shoot role, rather than charge into CC, you may want to build your guys as Blood Claws. Either way, I'd recommend that you invest in a few Rhinos/Razorbacks (Rhinos for Bloodclaws/Razorbacks for Grey Hunters).

Personally I would build them as GH. They are more flexible overall. I also would highly suggest Bjorn and Wulfen models. At least 5 Wulfen in a squad with the leader with frost claws, two of them with TH/SS and the other two with great axes. Run the Wulfen with the TWC since the Wulfen give an aura boost to fast attack/cavalry troops.

Since no one has said it yet welcome to the Pack! Space Wolves are freakin' awesome and you will have  a great deal of fun with them.

I have a GH question. Can a 5 man unit be 4 Grey hunters and a wolf guard pack leader, or would the wolf guard pack leader be in addition to the Grey hunter pack leader (so 6 man unit)?

Sadly the days of upgrading pack leaders to WGPLs is gone. Apparently GW wants us to buy more modules.

Anyways, adding a WGPL can give benefits to your GH pack such as additional attacks, slightly better leadership, and more diverse weapons such as stormbolters and combis to make even a small five man pack turn into a deadly objective holding force.

So with WGPL it would be 6 man then? So my start collecting set only has enough for two 5 man teams that have GHPLs, right?

Yes, hence why GW wants you to buy MORE units. Their devious plan is revealed.

But do consider once you get a basic feel going, try to expand on the needs you need. Probably try long fangs to add long range coverage then elite choices such as Wolf guard terminators or wulfen for shock troop assault.

Okay here is how I am thinking of building what I have. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.

TWC:

1 w/ Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield

1 w/ Power Fist & Storm Shield

1 w/ Frost Axe & Storm Shield

GH (2 five man units as below):

1 w/ Plasma gun & bolt pistol

1 w/ Wolf standard & standard weapons

1 w/ Plasma pistol & boltgun

2 standard loadout (boltgun & bolt pistol)

+ chainswords for all

1 Wolf Lord w/ Storm Bolter and Frost Sword

Primaris marines just built standard since they do not have options yet. However, it does not look like Space Wolves can use the Primaris Captain. Also, I will use some wolf bits on them.

Still trying to figure how to outfit my 10 wolf scouts.

Once these are built and painted I plan to add Bjorn, some Wulfen, and some vehicles (Rhino, Razorback, Stormfang, not sure yet).

Thoughts?

However, it does not look like Space Wolves can use the Primaris Captain.

Check out page 130 in the Index.  For Wolf Lords you can use the Captain or the Captain in Gravis Armour datasheet.  The Captain in Gravis Armour is the Primaris Captain.
