Ok - i hate tau in general, but 'Fire and Ice' is AWESOME.  SHORT-NOVELLA by Peter Fehervari about a hunted Inquisitorial agent, determined to end T'au influence on an Imperial world, which finds himself drawn into a larger game in which he may be a pawn – or he may be the key to victory.

Even BL knows he is awesome: 'Peter Fehervari is the master of the twisted tale, where nothing can be taken at face value and every line adds more to the tangled web of mystery – and 'Fire and Ice' takes that to whole new levels, as an Interrogator comes face to face with a legend…!'

It is so good and plot amazing that I can't remember a better W40K story (grim, dark, black humored, interesting) in a long while.
That Warhammer 40000 in it's prime. Truly cryptic, terrifying story that shows a true meaning of sacrifice in Imperium, neglect and indifference and 'aliency' of Tau Empire.

The appearance of old chap Calavera made it even better - after all 'We are Legion'!

Plus he had the best quotes and memories:
'Once their hearts are ignited they will burn until hope itself has turned to ash.'
And another awesome quote from the Traveller (you will guess his true name) - '‘I do not walk the vash’yatol to learn how to win...I walk to decide what I will do after I have won.’

If you still haven't read 'Fire Caste' by Peter Fehervari - then what are you still doing here? Go read it - you will get yourself quite a ride!
Special thanks to Peter for making me love Warhammer 40K again.

Agreed. Peter's done an amazing job here, which makes it even more mindboggling they didn't release it individually much earlier and only tucked it into Legends of the Dark Millennium more as an afterthought. Fire and Ice was an incredibly strong novella.

Did Peter Fehervari write the Genestealer Cults novel that I seem to recall was very well received too?

I'll definitely check this out, I love the T'au, but not read much about them.

As DC said he did indeed wrote GC. Fire and Ice you could like if you love Tau. Or you could hate due to the same reason

But if you simply want to read an awesomely written story - it is definitely for you!

yessir! And we want him to be commissioned to do more so GSCults hopefully sells well enough.

I want new series of novels from him with the Calavera as a protagonist!

I will definitely be buying this.

I was introduced to Peter F by you guys on here and I am so glad you did. He is the one author who has been terribly let down by the marketing team and studio tie in label for his books...talk about giving them the wrong title!

I have only read Genestealer Cults and a few shorts so far. I got hold of a second hand copy of Firecaste (which is my next book after finishing my mammoth re-read of the entire Gaunts Ghosts series in prep for Warmaster).

However, I have a question for you knowledgeable brothers...

Peter F appears to have a meta story going on with interlinked characters and events across the different stories (or so I have read on the Internet). So is there a best reading order for all his stories?

Thanks.

I will definitely be buying this.

He talks about his specific universe in our interview but honestly i need to go back and listen to it again to be sure I remember a few things correctly.

Actually I think it was your podcast whereI got that from. Be good to know if there is a best order as intend to do it.

Honestly, I don't think the order you read them in is a big concern. By publication order, you'd see Nightfall first (from Heroes of the Space Marines iirc), then Out Caste followed by Fire Caste.

But really, it is a web of stories, not a linear thing. I would have recommended Fire Caste starting out, before Crown of Thorns or Genestealer Cults, but it isn't vital. You'll still have "ohhh" effects either way. A bunch of shorts tie into Fire Caste, though, so I'd keep those aside til you get through that (Out Caste, Vanguard, Crown of Thorns, A Sanctuary of Wyrms).

For the reading order I'm partly with DC:

You start with Fire Caste > Out Caste > A Sanctuary of Wyrms > Vanguard > Crown of Thorns (that will cover one part).

Then read 'Fire and Ice' novella - you will know why.

then proceed with 'Hungry Shadow' > 'Genestealer Cults'

Thanks brother I intend to do just that

Wrong, Out Caste comes before Fire Caste

Dude, did you even read it?

Yes I did - but if he will read it before the Fire Caste he will miss lot of connections and impact that this short will have after reading the 'Fire Caste'.

Some stories are 'made' to read them after the main dish even if they are prequels.

Just finished Fire and Ice, really enjoyed it. Ordered Fire Caste too, so I'm looking forward to that. I take it Calavera is in some of his other stuff too? He was awesome, very mysterious.
I got an Alpha Legion feel from him? Not sure if it's just because he was mysterious, but things like his use of the term Primordial Annihilator, which was what the Cabal called Chaos when they told the AL about it.

Yes he is. And you will see his 'alter-ego' in other Peter stuff

I would also recommend The Walker in Fire - his contribution to the Deathwatch Overkill anthology. It should be read before The Crown of Thorns.

I don't know, I read Walker in Fire after Crown of Thorns, and I feel Walker in Fire was made stronger knowing how things would turn out. Edited by Jareddm

I'd wager almost everybody following Fehervari's work has read Walker after Crown, due to the publication dates alone. You don't lose anything by reading them out of chronological order, really.

Fehervari's stories are usually self-contained but contain plenty of ties across his own Dark Coil universe. You don't lose out by reading them out of order or one here and not the others. They're still cracking stories that you'll rarely see in 40k. If you catch the references, though, you'll get even more out of them. If anything, it encourages re-reading more than any other author's stories for Black Library.
