So, with my fairly newfound interest in WW1, and the 8th edition drop, I have found myself wanting to build my game table.

So there are a few design restrictions, my "table" is made up of three 1ftx4ft sections that I then lay across my kitchen table. This is because space is limited in my apartment, so I have to keep things small.

That said, I'm thinking of doing a table with two sections of trenchworks along the long sides of the board, such that the board is more or less symmetrical. Terrain pieces will go in "no man's land" between the two trenchwork deployment zones.

What do y'all think?

This has also given me some ideas on where to take my army as far as expansion. I was thinking of lining my trenches with a gunline of 3 infantry squads, and using conscript to go "over the top". My Stormtroopers would use their deep strike to get into position to rapid fire on the enemy lines. Conscripts would probably have a commissar with them to ensure their loyal charge.

Trench would work well with those dimensions, I think the trick is to make sure they're nicely recessed so you get the trench look without them being too high up - the rest is all about the mud and weathering I'm sure :)

Alternatively, you could design a scenario based around First World War trench warfare. You'd want to take the trenches, but the risk of leaving your own without your artillery having softened up the enemy enough could serve as a deterrent, allowing for the early game to largely consist of bombardments and sniper fire with the later game moving on to trench-storming, machine gun fire, etc.

Something I dont see often with trenchworks is that people just tend to focus on no mans land, you can also look into having it be "within the line" so to speak of having interlocking trenchworks with 2ndary slip trenches and communication trenches between the 2 sides, as if 1 of them has successfuly taken the front line trench already and is pushing into the rear while the other side rushes to stop them and push them back.

Its a limited image sure, but it gets over my meaning I think of having the fight being in the support trench with a frontline and 3rd line on either side of it :smile.:

So, I kinda wanted the board to accommodate the trenchworks, but also be balanced for play. Now, I could extend the trenchworks a bit further foward of the 12" deployment zones and then have a second line of support trenches (not quite to scale though) that forces could start in.

Such a board would surely benefit Guard and Tau the best (both of which are armies I play and own), but the idea is that there would be enough area that you wouldn't have to use the trenches. Also, i think it would be interesting to see how armies with deep strike and aircraft handle trench warfare.

This would also be my first real foray into building trenchworks, so I want it to be as simple as possible to build. I would love to have a second board that is as you describe Mitchverr, so that the fight from one board could be continued on another, or set up as one continuous 6x8 table for things like planetstrike campaigns. Sadly My apartment is not large enough to accommodate such a grand undertaking.

Keep the Ideas Flowing, Since with 8th edition my interest in 40k has been rekindled, and when I finally do start playing again, I would love to do some narrative battreps (though from the perspective of the models, and minus the pictures, as a writing exercise).
