i can't speak for tourneys but the footprint of the onager hits the base edge so in friendly games i'd say fine and visualise a curve from each foot to the other...

i guess if you really like conversions and awesome bases then the onager base is a dream come true with what you could fit on it :wub:

As long as you don't model it with the legs tucked up under the central body to give it a smaller profile (modeling for advantage) I don't see a problem using Onagers without the base.  Just keep in mind that, given the size of the base, those legs count for checking range/LOS!
