Yup, you allocate the wound first, then you make the save (or not) and then you apply the damage to the model in the form of removing wounds.

Another interesting thing in that context, while the rules first say that you can freely allocate wounds to any model in the unit, they also say that if a model has already lost a wound the next wounds must be allocated to that model. This means that you can never have more than one wounded model. No more spreading out wounds. You have to buy ablative models, even for multi wound models

Yes, what you do is for every wound you suffer you assign a model to make a save and then roll, inflicting damage if you save.

Now ofcourse this is often shortcut by rolling multiple dice for convenience.

Assume a unit of 5 with 3 ss's and 2 without suffers 6 plasma wounds.

You declare you use ss's to save and roll 3 dice. remove casualties if failed, then roll 3 more (or less if some models died) until your out of ss models. then you roll for the remaining 2 models with that save (prob 6's).

If you roll all 6 dice at once you dont know when during the shooting your last SS potentially dies.

And ofcourse if a model is wounded but not dead then that model has to take the wound (and make his save)
