+PADRE+
Hey guys, New to the forum and to Warhammer 40k in general however, have followed GW for quite awhile now and finally taking the plunge into the realm of tabletop war gaming! I've picked up the starter set for Militarium Tempestus and the index and looking to build a complete MT force for a semi competitive local scene. Scions striking with precision from the back of flyers or pin point deep striking backed up by heavy covering fire support from the taurox primes whilst providing transportation. Love the feel of this army. Was hoping to discuss all things MT including unit load outs, tactics, paint colour schemes etc and if anything else in the astra militarium index would add to this theme. So far I have: 1 Lord Commissar w/ plasma pistol, power sword 1 Temepstus Prime w/ plasma pistol, command rod 5 Temepstus Command Squad w/ banner, vox caster, medic, flamer, 5 Scions w/ vox caster, 2 plasma, 2 hot-shot lasguns 1 Taurox Prime Thanks guys! BossSauce
I would reccommend looking towords Mordian Glory on YouTube for tactics, got some good stuff for both guard and MT for both 7th and 8th edition. Inquisitor Fox
My biggest advice, especially with a more precision army like Militarum Tempestus, is you don't want to fight fair. You do not want to line up and walk forward in a slug-fest. Do not feel like you only want to send one unit against one unit. You want to apply overwhelming firepower to one unit at a time and gobble them up. Have a transport zoom over, drop off a squad, deep strike nearby, then have all three units blast the same target. Do not fight fair or you will lose :) Also, play to the mission objectives. Many newer or inexperienced players get caught up in trying to "kill all the things" that they end up not holding enough objectives or actually fulfilling the mission win conditions. It'll be similar to Warcraft or Starcraft or other such games where sometimes you win by not killing things, but instead by holding the points for X rounds, or keeping specific models alive or something like that. In those scenarios, sacrificing units to help other units fulfil the objectives is actually right. I also highly recommend allying in an Inquisitor, we're awesome ;) librisrouge 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335886-militarium-tempestus-wants-you/#findComment-4802809 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Welcome to the B&C and Guard :D Stormies are much improved in 8th but their key tactics remain the same. As Fox says play dirty ;) You will be able to fill up unit slots easily with lots of five man squads for lots of Command Points to abuse, and for the "who dares wins" style of Scions that backup will really help. Do you have any colour schemes in mind yet? +PADRE+
Thanks BossSauce for your feedback, unfortunately Mordian Glory hasn't play tested and talked about any of the Militarium Tempestus stuff in 8th that I could see on his youtube channel (wasn't searching for any 7th edition tactica though so might go check that out). Thanks Inquisitor Fox for your feedback. I like your input! Just what I had in mind. I've been unsure on how to load out my units so far. Vox casters or not, banner, medikit etc for the command squad. Not sure if its necessary yet points wise. My current load out for the command squad (see original post above) is for taking objectives and a defensive bunker for Lord Commissar and for the Tempestus Prime to issue orders. I'm also unsure about vox casters in the regular scions also. Eventually my thoughts was to have for every one unit of Tempestus Prime w/Command Squad (quad plasma or melta) they would be accompanied by a unit of scions. Drop onto the battlefield and strike targets together with duel orders. Burst fire on selected targets as Inquisitor Fox mentioned above. Unsure how to run Taurox Primes also. However, I do like the Valkyries flyers and would fit nicely into my MT Tactical Insertion theme force. I thought the Officer of the Fleet was quite fluffy for this list also. Thanks guys for the feedback, much appreciated. +PADRE+
Thanks WarriorFish. For painting I was thinking of the current 55th Kappic Eagles. They do look quite nice. I do like the colour scheme black, orange, blue and a little bit of white aslo. slowclinic
MT are going to be an interesting faction in 8th, as they are already receiving a lot of praise - some have gone as far to say they are downright OP. I have a small selection of MT that I've been trying out, as follows:Tempestor Prime, Command Rod MT Command Squad, 4x Plasma 5-man Scion, 2x Melta 5-man Scion, 2x Melta It all comes in at 242pts, or 11pp (off the top of my head on the pp there...), and they're actually modelled from how I played them in 7th. The Scion squads basically act as shock units, dropping in near vehicles behind the back line and trying to pop tough targets, or at least lessen their effectiveness. As for the Command Squad, I've been dropping them in along with the Prime to rapid fire overcharged plasma, taking advantage of the re-roll 1s order that's basically giving MT the rep for being OP - these go on to target the tougher, multi wound heavy infantry, although can also do considerable damage against vehicles. Terminators are appearing more in my local meta, and as long as the Scions don't get charged the following turn, they're pretty safe. As mentioned, the issue is the lack of any real heavy artillery or super hard hitting weapons. Then again, if we're following fluff, that's not what they are for. Brother Talarian
Welcome! I'm also a huge fan of the Scions. However, I only have two start collecting boxes and some metal kaskrin atm. I've been toying with the idea of running x2 5 man squads with 2 melts riding in a taurox prime. These would be a reactionary unit (or assault if you want to play that way) to quickly drive up to the biggest threat and blast away with close ranges melts shots. I then have a 4 man plasma command squad and am unsure how to kit the last squad... I've been thinking of a 4 man HSVG squad to melt MEQ units. Valkeryies would be another great addition and fluffy. I'd have to get a few more games in before I give solid tactical advice. But overall build/paint what you think is badass. Though, there seems to be a consensus that plasma is dominant this edition. NatBrannigan
What a great time to start Scions! They were lacking a bit in 7th but have improved immensely with 8th! Lots of good advice so far so my own would be: Special weapons, Plasma and Melta are what you want with Scions. The BS3+ gives the reliability you need to make these expensive weapons worth it. That BS is wasted when using flamers and grenade launchers. I'm a big fan of Volley Guns as well, but for me they work best in a command squad that won't be moving as apposed to your Scion Squads that will probably want to stay mobile. Taurox Primes are ace. A mix of everything will work nicely. Gatling and Volley Guns for hordes. Battlecannon / Missiles and Autocannon for heavy hitting support. Commisars aren't as important for Scions as they are for regular guard, but are hardly useless. Tempestor Primes for juicy orders are essential. As mentioned earlier an Inquisitor makes for a cracking (and fluffy!) HQ. With their special rule they can share transports with the Scions. Valkries and Vendettas are also good fluffy choices if you want some Scions to be landing closer than 9" to the enemy (gravchute insertion). I suggest a squad with Meltaguns for this (Boom....) Finally, Forgeworld. Some people from on it but there are a few options in there that will really help Scions. The Vulture gunship (Punisher Cannons obviously!) will shred hordes, or just about anything with a lowish toughness. It'll sync really well with the Officer of the Fleet you mentioned wanting as well. I agree with the HSVG Command Squad. Even at -1BS for moving, that is a lot of shots going off that can overpower Infantry and MSU MEQ with the right orders. I'm yet to purchase a Taurox, although something tells me I'll be getting the Start Collecting! box real soon... I'm already mentally planning a CS with HSVG and another suicide melta squad. One interesting thing I've seen floating about is kitting out a Scion CS with grenade launchers. Definitely an overlooked option, and for good reason, but it also has the potential to put out a lot of hurt. micahwc
I've think Scions may be my main imperial army. I've got 20 scions, 2 commisars, 2 taurox primes, and 2 Valkyrie/Vendettas so far. My list so far is: Tempestor Prime, Command Rod, power fist Commisar, Power fist, Plasma Pistol Commisar, Power fist, Plasma Pistol Command Squad, 4x plasma guns Scion Squad, plasma pistol, 2x melta guns, 3 hotshot lasguns Scion Squad, plasma pistol, 2x melta guns, 3 hotshot lasguns Scion Squad, plasma pistol, 2x Hotshot Volleyguns, 3 hotshot lasguns. Taurox Prime, Taurox Gatling Cannon, 2x Autocannons Taurox Prime, Taurox Gatling Cannon, 2x Autocannons 2 Valkyries (weapons are magnetized, and I will be able to field them as Vendettas once I finish the lascannons) I've been trying to figure out how I want to expand from here. I think maximizing the squad sizes would be good to do eventually. I have been thinking about getting a pair of Officers of the Fleet, to ride in the Vendettas. That way when the Vendetta drops into hover mode to fire at full BS I can drop an OOTF and reroll my 1s. Tempestor prime will drop with the command squad 9.1" inches away from a target and give the order re-roll 1's, so the command squad can supercharge more safely. I plan to eventually have a second command squad to go with them; which is why I gave the Tempestor Prime the command rod instead of a plasma pistol. I think the next steps for this army would be a Vulture gunship with dual punisher cannons, and maybe some tarantula emplacements. They would fit the theme pretty well. librisrouge 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335886-militarium-tempestus-wants-you/#findComment-4803424 Share on other sites
micahwc
Just calculated the points and if I want to run a pure Scion/Navy force I need to buy 6 more boxes of scions and 3 vultures. That may take a bit. I'd have a battalion of scions and an air wing of Vendettas/Vultures. Vendettas are surprisingly about 80 points more than a Vulture with punisher cannons. Brother Lame
I was literally about to make a thread just like this, I picked up one of the Start Collecting Deathwatch and Start Collecting Militarium Tempestus boxsets with the intention of using the former in Drop Pods (5x Combi-Plas and 4x Frag Cannons with Artemis joining them) and then having a load of Tempestus Scions as the support as I've always wanted them since they first came out. I'm looking at bunging both squads in the Battle Bus Taurox Prime and then rolling it up across the board as best I can before dropping in the Big Boys Deathwatch to just absolutely bamboozle one part of their battle line. I think that all came to about 48-9 PR/1008ish points? After that I wanted more Scions probably in another Taurox Prime. That said, I couldn't decide on the best way to kit them out/use them. Getting some good ideas from this thread, having maybe two Command Squads each with a Tempestor Prime, one with four plasma and the other with 4 volley guns sounds good each with an accompanying squad of Scions with duo meltas in a Taurox Prime sounds good? That way you've got an order or two per bus and most bases covered in terms of targets. micahwc
Vulture has "strafing run" giving it a +1 to targets without the "fly" keyword. As for Vendettas, you can disembark an Officer of the Fleet amd stand still for the turn, shoot 6 lascannons at something while rerolling 1s, and try to survive with T7, a 3+ save, and 14 wounds. Anything shooting at a Vendetta isn't shooting the rest of your army. Even without the -1 from "hard to hit" they are pretty tough. Praesul
I'm in a similar boat to OP. Returning to 40k after...a long time, a decade really, and starting back up with Scions and Knights. I know if previous editions you would want to max out the special weapon payload, but with FRFSRF I'm not sure if that is still the plan. Which special weapons do you think are most useful, will be magnetized, but I also want to efficiently order bits. Right now I have 2 Getting Started boxes and a separate squad box, and 3 Knights. I was considering running them alongside the Knights to act as escorts or to go after high value anti armor targets early in the game. Do you think that is a viable strategy? Speaking of bits, are there any good sources of plastic Empire heads out there? +PADRE+
Thanks for all the feedback. What do you think of vox casters? Considering both the prime's command squad unit and the receiving scions unit must have a vox caster to issue longer ranged orders is it worth loosing ranged fire power to issue orders out to 18"? I'm kinda thinking that tactically we should be able to position our primes in command squads close enough to issue the second order to nearby scions, 6" I think is the ranged for issuing orders without vox to vox. Thoughts? I'm enjoying this thread on MT so far Edited July 1, 2017 by +PADRE+ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335886-militarium-tempestus-wants-you/#findComment-4804180 Share on other sites
Aothaine
I'll be running a TON of different stuff. GW has made it really easy to mix armies together. You can now have the iconic imperial guard and space marine lists mixed and it will look good. Or anything else Imperium. The down sides are very few. I'm thinking about having two separate detachments that I can run or possibly mix and match. Here are the plasma and melta Battalions. Plasma Battalion Detachment - 717 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Plasma Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 66 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Plasma Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 66 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Plasma Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 66 Melta Battalion Detachment - 867 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Meltagun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 76 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Meltagun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 76 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Meltagun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 76 Hot-shot Volley Gun Battalion Detachment - 777 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Hot-shot Volley Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 70 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Hot-shot Volley Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 70 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Hot-shot Volley Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 70 Mixed Battalion Detachment - 787 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 HQ - Tempestor Prime + Plasma Pistol - 45 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Hot-shot Volley Gun x4 - 72 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Meltagun x4 - 84 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 ELITE - Militarum Tempestus Command Squad + Plasma Gun x4 - 64 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Hot-shot Volley Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 70 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Meltagun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 76 TROOP - Militarum Tempestus Scions + Plasma Pistol + Plasma Gun x2 + Hot-shot Lasgun x2 - 66 Deployed Battalion Detachment: Uses units from above and adds in Taurox Primes. Alternatively you can max out on the Scions and drop the special weapons to get more bodies and allow for more expensive transports, though I am of the mind that the Taurox Prime is amazing and one of the best dedicated transports in the game. DT - Taurox Prime (Build these to fill the gaps in your force.) Anti-infantry: Taurox Gatling Cannon + Hot-shot Volley Guns x2 + Storm Bolter - 98 Anti-MEQ: Taurox Battle Cannon + Auto Cannon x2 + Heavy Stubber - 122 Anti-Allrounder: Taurox Missile Launcher + Auto Cannon x2 + Heavy Stubber - 144 Tactics The reserve battalions will drop in with one prime two command squads and one scion squad. The goal being as you drop in you will have two orders onto each of your command squads. You will then have three drop forces to drop into key locations or split them up if necessary. You could even drop all of them on one flank if you wanted, might be a bit over-kill though lol! I think the Plasma or Hot-Shot Volley Detachment will be the best detachments to drop in. Both will be able to clear chaff and allow your Taurox primes to focus down big targets with their missiles/battle cannons and auto cannons. However, I think allying these bad boys in with another faction that has complete domination in long-ranged firepower or one that is assault heavy is the best bet here. Possibly a space marine armored division loaded out with Las Cannons. I need to look into this more though. ** Note: It will cost ~$1,275 USD to purchase all the plasma/melta/hot-shot volley guns required for these setups. I also want to note that it is only for the detachments listed above. If you purchase 15 get started boxes which means you might be able to recoup some of the money selling some of the Taurox Primes on eBay for $15 is a pretty good deal. Possible a $3-$5 profit after shipping. Maybe.. It will cost ~$1050 if you just purchase the command squad or scion squad as the sprues are the same from what I can tell. You will not get any Taurox Primes this way though. This may seem like a lot. But I want to point out here that you will be able to build the following from purchasing 15 start collecting boxes. 30 Plasma Gun Scions 30 Hot-shot Volley Gun Scions 30 Meltagun Scions 30 Hot-shot Lasgun Scions (Or a mix of flamers/grenade launchers but keep in mind you need at least 6 Lasgun Scions and would be better served with at least 12 to fill our the Scion troop squads if needed) 6 Plasma Pistol toting Tempestors + 9 other variants if you would like 3 Tempestor Primes with Plasma Pistols + up to 12 variants of special options 15 Commisars 15 Taurox Primes Now.. This is a TON of stuff to build and paint. But man.. you will be equipped to handle anything and build any list with the Tempestus that you could possibly want. You could also go the magnet route to save you some painting but it won't end up saving you money as you still need the plasma guns. Another option you have is to ditch building either the Meltagun or Volley Gun Scion and equip them with Lasguns instead to fill out more troop choices to use as many of those Taurox Primes as possible and just run straight Militarum Tempestus.
