So I had a thought of using the new supreme command or vanguard detachment to make a (supporting) force of 'Movie Marines' made up of Captains, champions and other characters but modelling them as mostly tactical or assault marines.

It does not sound very viable as they are not packing a lot of fire power, and I'd need an allied imperial force to prevent them being shot to bits, but what characters have the best 'value' in such a scenario? 6 stock captains are roughly 450Pts, and I'd probably want to give a 'Sgt' some plasma and one or two a jump pack for mobility. An Apothecary would also be more fluffy for 'Movie Marines'.

My only real requirements are, individually powerful stats, characters, simple to WYSIWYG (so no chaplains or librarians unless I decide to take a them) and not so many points I can't take a main force in a average game.

Any thoughts?

I think this is a brilliant idea, personally - five Captains standing in as a Tactical Demi-Squad. Give one a combi weapon (but only use the melta/flamer/plasma/grav bit) , the rest bolters, the 'sgt' a power weapon and pistol or even a storm bolter.

Classic stuff. I really like this and might even do it myself!

You could even include a squad heavy weapon by having a Techmarine with Conversion Beamer? (Counts-as a standard heavy weapon of some sort, obvs)

I might use a JP equipped Chaplain as part of the Assault squad for the Fight boost?

I doubt many opponents would be against you fielding a Captain armed with (say) a heavy bolter and bolt pistol as a Tactical or Devastator Marine to be honest, so long as you pay the points for the heavy bolter (or not, if you're just using Power).

I think that's a very good idea.

If you're worried about the conversion beamer just explain it away as a chapter relic, I expect some chapters like the Consecrators have a few lying around and they were originally shoulder mounted heavy weapons.

Yeah my original idea was to do it while stretching the rules and WYSIWYG as little as possible but everyone is welcome to have their own take on it. If you need lone heavy weapons guys you can just take one member of a devastator squad, remember, you just pay the full cost of the squad but you don't have to field all the models. Having the heavy weapons not built into the base cost also makes it sting a little less.

Holy hell, I am SO making a movie crusader squad. I will use Primaris HQ stats for Initiates and low-level HQ stats for Neophytes.

Or use Primaris HQ stats for a movie Sword Brethren squad.

Epic.

Honor guard might make a good cheap stand in for basic bolter marines. They come with bolters pistols and a power weapon, which you could use an axe as a movie marine chainsword. Their 2+ and 2 wounds make them pretty durable.

Can't believe I didn't see this topic as I've done this, to the extreme. 19 character models in a 2k game.

Here's my advice from that game.

Psychic powers are a huge threat since they negate some of the gimmicks you are relying on to protect you from enemy fire.

Small hard hitting units don't care too much that you have characters as they won't overkill by much.

All in all captains are a great buy due to innate re rolls, solid number of wounds, built in invuln, lots of options, and not all that expensive. My list had several chaplains, my special characters, couple lieutenants, apothecaries, and a bunch of captains.
