Tempesta

Tempesta

The Griffons Tempest recruit mainly from the world of Tempesta. Located in Segmenta Pacifica, Tempesta was initially passed by for colonization. After the Horus Heresy colonization was finally authorized in an attempt to create an agriworld, whose main export would be the Kor'aoth beasts that roamed the planet. The initial city was constructed after the yearly season of intense storms that wrack the planet. Fully completed with Void shields ahead of schedule the success of the colonization efforts seemed to be providence of the Emperor himself. When the first storms struck, disaster ensued. The Void shields attracted the Storms that swept across the plains. Every lightning strike from the storms blasted the Void Shields designed to protect the City with the force of a Lance strike. More and more storms developed around the city each strike of Lightning attracting more storms until finally the Void Generators overloaded in a cataclysmic explosion. The storms savaged the city bringing down buildings and forcing the inhabitants to flee. The Imperial investigators sent to the planet after nearly a Decade of being out of contact found only a lone buoy in orbit describing the plight of the City. The investigators were called away before they had a chance to set foot planetside, being called away on more important matters than a failed colony.

The few survivors had found safety in the sewers of the city and cave networks in the surrounding hills. Forced to make due with what they had left and tending herds of Kor'aoth the survivors cut out a living. Two sects of people began to dominate the world. The Hivers, who settled in the ruins of the city domesticating Dwarf Griffons that infested the ruins as loyal watch hounds. The second group was the Plainsmen, the men that semi-domesticated the the Kor'aoth, watching over their herds from the Tempesta Griffons. The Plainsmen carved their homes initially out of the caves in the hillsides, these were later expanded into cities carved into the hillside with protective stone overhangs. With time another sect formed, that of outlaws on the outskirts of civilization, those that were banished to make their fate in the wilds, and the mountains, where the mighty Roc Griffons staked their hunting grounds.

Learning their lessons from the original colonization efforts the Chapter Fortress, known as the Griffons Aerie, is located on a Dwarf Planet in the outskirts of the system. The Griffons Tempest do maintain a small outpost in orbit of the world, used for the more invasive testing of potential recruits. The Griffons Aerie was built directly into the Dwarf Planet, it is used for much of the training of the Chapter recruits, and to house and maintain most of the Chapter Fleet.
