That is to say, me - Jarl Deathwolf. I chose my username long before Harald got his model. In any case, I just got done with my first battle of 8th edition, 100 Power Level. It was a glorious battle, worthy of recounting anyway, but I also had a few rules questions. I don't have my index yet (Amazon cancelled my order for some reason), but I had the leaks which was good enough. I wrote down the lists but got so absorbed with the game I forgot to take notes beyond that.

Without further ado...

My list:

Battalion Detachment

HQ: Logan Grimnar

Arjac Rockfist

Rune Priest Jurgen Windcaller, on a bike with a psychic hood

Troops: x3 10 Grey Hunters

 - Bloodhowl: 2 Meltas, 10 chainswords, Wolf Standard

 - Sagacallers+Sunwolves: 2 Plasma Guns, 10 chainswords, Wolf Standard

Elites: 5 TDAWG

 - 3 Combi-Flamers, 2 Combi-Meltas, 1 Sword, 2 Axes, 1 Fist, 1 Claw

5 WG Bikers

Wolf Scouts

 - Sniper Rifles, Camo Cloaks, 1 Rocket Launcher

Lone Wolf Hrothgar in TDA

 - TH/SS

Fast Attack: 5 Fenrisian Wolves (I had two points left over)

Black Legion

HQ: Ahriman

Daemon Prince of Tzeentch, wings, malefic talons

Abaddon the Despoiler (Warlord - Tenacious Survivor)

Troops: 9 1k Sons

Elites: 10 TDA - random assortment of weapons, but all had a combi weapon or reaper cannon

6 Flamers of Tzeentch

5 Warp Talons

Rhino

By his reckoning he had 0 command points, and I had six. I wasn't sure about this, but he insisted that since his detachment wasn't battle-forged he had none. I let the matter slide.

The objectives didn't matter in the end, so I won't go into that. Suffice it to say they were scattered about. He got the first turn and spent it bringing in the TDA next to my deployment zone and devastating my Wolf Scouts.

On my turn, I dropped everything and went entirely on the offense. Grimnar dropped in the enemy deployment zone, surrounded by Wolf Guard TDA and Hrothgar. Jurgen killed two and half terminators with Jaws, which was hilarious. Command points helped there. The Bikers assaulted the TDA along with the Fenrisian Wolves, as Arjac looked on. The Fenrisian Wolves took out a single terminator before being wiped and by the end the bikers were down one and the terminators were down to 6 guys. Hrothgar murdered Ahriman.

On his 2nd turn, Abbadon and the Warp Talons arrived. Warp Talons apparently shut off all overwatch on the entire board. This allowed his Daemon Prince and rhino to assault my Grey Hunters and TDA, respectively. Logan, full of heroism, intervened in the rhino combat, killing it. The Sagacallers took a beating and the Bikers lost a couple of their own.

My turn, dropped more terminators down holes. Assaulted with Arjac and Jurgen to try and save the last Biker. Logan and the TDA assaulted Abbadon, while Hrothgar harassed the 1k Sons. Abbadon was dropped to one wound, but three TDAWGs were lost. A couple 1k Sons fell, and the last of the Chaos TDA died, but not before killing my last biker.

His 3rd turn, fell back with 1k sons, shot Hrothgar with flamers. Despite 12 hits and him only have one wound, he survives. Daemon Prince assaults since I fell back with the Sagacallers. Bloodhowl wounds him in overwatch and loses but one man in the ensuing assault. The Warp Talons assault the Old Wolf, bringing him low, as Abbadon finishes off the TDAWG.

My turn, drop Abbadon down a hole, smite a couple Warp Talons, Hrothgar kills more 1k Sons in assault, and the Grey Hunters overcharge their plasma guns, bringing down the Daemon Prince. With Arjac and Jurgen killing the Warp Talons, and the 1k Sons locked in with Hrothgar, the Chaos player concedes the battle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel I made some poor decisions in the battle - assaulting with the bikers may not have been my best bet since I could have just ignored the TDA, and my weapons were useless against them.  I used my command points frivolously, and didn't have them when i really needed them.

That being said, I think opening the second front and pinning his forces with uber-tough models was a good idea. With his Daemon Prince and TDA unable to check them, the TDAWG ran rampant. Logan's re-roll aura is truly indispensable.

Side note: Surprisingly, the Fenrisian Wolves have an AP of -1. I did not expect this and that was why they managed a kill.

My questions were the following:

The sagacallers lost a man to supercharged plasma, but one of the two shots he fired hit. Do I resolve that hit, or does his death nullify it?

The 1k Sons had a Sorcerer who fell back, but then cast smite at Hrothgar. Can you fall back and cast shooty psychic powers?

Logan killed the rhino and the Flamers were 2.5" away. Would he have been able to consolidate into close combat with them?

The plasma bearer is slain after all shots have been resolved.

You can fall back and cast psychic powers.

Yes, Logan could have consolidated into a new unit and locked it into combat.

Ah, I see. I let him smite, but Jurgen managed to block it anyway. As for the plasma gun, we got confused because the only other precedence we saw was that if a psyker dies while casting a spell, the spell doesn't take affect. If only Logan could've reached the flamers... they were the only unit to escape untouched.

I think I'm going to like 8th edition, if only for the fact that I didn't feel any of my units were worthless. Every unit gave a good account of themselves. I even bet the scouts would have been helpful if they survived. Even so, they absorbed a lot of shots. And I'm glad Grimnar is useful again. I couldn't field him for all of 7th edition.

My understanding of warp talons is that overwatch cannot be fired against them the turn they arrive, not the whole army. So you should have had overwatch on the rest of the combats. But it's early and rules get misread (and I'm not 100% sure of my interpretation I will check it tonight at home).

As for consolidating into new combats, this has been my favorite feature of 8th in the couple games I've gotten in. Really helps keep units safe.

The wording is a little meh but "Enemy units cannot overwatch against units(*) in the same turn that they(*) arrive by warpflame strike"

Imo 'they' applies to the units being overwatched against.

If the intent was to stop overwatching it its entirety it would have simply said "Enemy units cannot overwatch on the turn a unit arrives by warpflame strike".

The wording is there to signify against which units you are not allowed to overwatch.

I thought it was pretty ridiculous that they stopped all overwatch everywhere. Otherwise, you could just field three units of them and stop all overwatch for most of the game. I'll be sure to mention this next time I see that Chaos Lord.

Doesn't it also prevent overwatch? That was mainly why I wanted to pile into them - even terminators would balk at the 6d6 automatic hits.
