This is my first posting on this forum as I'm very new to 30k - I've never actually played a game!

Advice and comments on this list would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for an "all comers" list, but not worried about being overly competitive - just don't want to get tabled every game!

Thanks!

Legion Champion [140pts]: Artificer Armour, Combat Shield, Phoenix Spear, Plasma Pistol, Sonic Shrieker

. Consul: Legion Champion

A Chaplain would be more competitive, but the Legion Champion is a very fluffy choice

For the same cost as the Combat Shield a Boarding Shield is superior. It gives you the same save, but also comes with defensive grenades. The down side is that you can't gain the bonus attack for using two close combat weapons, but because the Phoenix Spear is two handed you weren't getting the bonus attack anyway.

From a gaming perspective plasma pistols are massively over-costed.

Legion Praetor [441pts]: Combi-Weapon, Digital Lasers, Grenade Harness, Iron Halo, Mastercraft a Single Weapon, Paragon Blade, Sonic Shrieker, Tartaros Terminator Armour

. Legion Terminator Command Squad: 2x Chainfist, 2x Combi-weapon, Grenade Harness, 3x Legion Space Marine Chosen, Legion Standard Bearer, Pair of Lightning Claws, Plasma Blaster, Tartaros Terminator Armour

The Praetor is 217pts by himself. That's a lot.

For 180pts you could take a Praetor Tribune. You'd miss out on the Combi-weapon, Sonic Shriekers, and the Grenade Harness. He is considerably cheaper and the Command Squad already has a Grenade Harness (so unless you're running the Praetor and the Command Squad separately that's wasted points).

This unit will be extremely vulnerable when they Deep Strike in.

Master of Signal [150pts]: Artificer Armour, Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, Refractor Field, Sonic Shrieker

. Consul: Master of Signal

Which unit is he joining?

Palatine Blade Squad [403pts]: 8x Palatine Warrior, 8x Power Sword, Sonic Shriekers

. Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod: Frag Assault Launchers

. Palatine Prefector: Melta Bombs, Pheonix Spear

This unit will be deadly on the charge but is very expensive with all of the Power Swords and lacks AP2 apart from the Prefector. Will the Legion Champion be joining this unit?

Phoenix Terminator Squad [290pts]: 4x Phoenix Terminators, Sonic Shriekers

. Pheonix Champion: Grenade Harness

If these guys are Deep Striking they will be very vulnerable on the turn they come down.

. Entire Squad may exchange their Flamers for:: Plasma gun

. Legion Sergeant: Artificer Armour, Bolt Pistol, Chainsword or Combat Blade, Melta Bombs, Plasma Gun

Additional Combat weapons, artificer armour and melta-bombs might be unnecessary on these two units. They'll come in and do some nice damage the first time they shoot, but the enemy should be able to take care of five marines in their next turn.

The points saved might be better spent of the Tactical Squads.

Deathstorm Drop Pod [145pts]: Drop Pod Assault special rule, Five Deathstorm Krak Launchers

. One Sky Slayer may be upgraded to a Sky Slayer Sergeant: Bolt Pistol, Melta Bombs, Phoenix Spear

Another fluffy choice for the Emperor's Children. For 195pts you could take three Javelin Attack Speeders with twin-linked cyclone missile launchers and multi-meltas (plus they are BS5 against ground targets thanks to 'Strafing Run').

Legiones Astartes: III: Emperor's Children, Loyalist

Good to see some more Loyalist Emperor's Chilren (my favourite army). Personally I wouldn't take any Sonic Shriekers or Phoenix Terminators in a Loyalist army for fluff reasons (it's perfectly legal rules wise). The Sonic Shriekers are derived from Chaos/Slaanesh corrupted Xenos biology that has been implanted by Chief Apothecary Fabius (or one of his lackeys). I'm not sure how loyal you can be if you've been surgically implanted willChaos corrupted material. Of course you could say that your warriors don't actually have Sonic Shriekers, and that the rules effect simply represents their supreme skill as duelists/warriors.

In regards to the Phoenix Guard there were only ever 200 warriors at any time so it seems unlikely that any would have stayed loyal (they would have been fanatically loyal to the Primarch) and if any did I imagine their brothers/Fulgrim would have dealt with them pretty quickly.

These two fluff points are purely down to personal taste. If you want to use Phoenix Guard and Sonic Shriekers then do it!

Rite of War: Orbital Assault

++ Total: [2999pts] ++

Looks good bro! I've often considered starting an Emperor's Children Orbital Assault or Angel's Wrath army, so it's great to see someone else starting one. The list seems to have a nice mix of fluff and good units to play with. One thing I'd note is that at 3000pts you should expect to come up against Superheavy Vehicles and Primarchs and I'm not sure if your list has a good counter to those kind of units.

Looking forward to seeing how it goes. If you start a paint blog for the army definitely post a link here. I'm always keen to see another IIIrd Legion army

The down side is that you can't gain the bonus attack for using two close combat weapons, but because the Phoenix Spear is two handed you weren't getting the bonus attack anyway. From a gaming perspective plasma pistols are massively over-costed. I agree, but I like the look. I will see what I can get if I drop all things like this...

Which unit is he joining? One of the two Tactical Support Squads, probably the plasma. He's there for an extra Nuncio-vox and can lend them extra BS.

Yeah, this unit is for the Legion Champion. I know Power Swords really add up, but I don't want these guys stuck in a protracted combat, so anything to help prevent that is welcome.

Phoenix Terminator Squad [290pts]: 4x Phoenix Terminators, Sonic Shriekers

These two fluff points are purely down to personal taste. If you want to use Phoenix Guard and Sonic Shriekers then do it!

Sonic Shriekers are derived from Xenos "tech" but not yet Slaanesh. These are the forerunners to proper sonic weaponry. I like the idea that these guys were going down the path with everyone else, just as loyal and dedicated as the rest of the IIIrd, but when the Heresy happened they have chosen the other side. Had the Heresy happened a few months or a year later, maybe these guys would have chosen differently, or maybe not. But the point is Sonic Shriekers themselves are not "evil", it's just another bio-modification to add to all the others in a Space Marine physiology. Or maybe it's a step on the path to corruption, who knows? :happy.:

Phoenix Guard. Maybe these guys don't believe the rumours that Fulgrim has turned traitor. Maybe they're deployed so remotely, they haven't even heard of the Heresy. Or perhaps they have sworn to avenge the memory of their hero Fulgrim, by slaying the monster he's become. Hell, this whole army could be pre-Heresy! Whatever the case, these miniatures are gorgeous!

One thing I want to do with my Loyalist IIIrd is to have them really feel and look like an EC army - just be on the opposite side to one would expect.

One thing I'd note is that at 3000pts you should expect to come up against Superheavy Vehicles and Primarchs and I'm not sure if your list has a good counter to those kind of units.

This is something I'm very worried about

How would you go about dealing with them, without changing the feel of the list?

Edited by Daimhin

To add -

If I make the cuts discussed above, I can fit a Land Speeder Javelin. Which is nice.

However, if I want to, I can drop the Javelin and the Sky Slayers and put my two terminator squads in Dreadclaws. This seems like buying survivability but at a cost of threat and damage output. Thoughts?

Primarchs are difficult as they roll with bodyguards.

Superheavies, less so. Try fitting in a Contemptor (the cheaper one with special abilities) with a chainfist, 2 in built grav guns and an anvillus.

Pod down, turbo boost to cover. Next turn, hop the contemptor out, rage, shoot the 2 gravs, anything but a 1 takes a hull point. charge, 6 attacks, strength 10 armourbane. should rip a new one in most things...

Primarchs and body guard is just down to weight of fire I guess, the plasma support squad should kill a few body guard. Mos has his orb bomb too.

Awesome list man,

I agree with everything you've said so far in regards to expensive units such as your praetor. Keep it fluffy and how you want it rather than being purely point efficient.

One thing I'd change - i like the area of denial idea on the deathstorms but I reckon you've already got plenty of that with your other drop pods.

It's competitive but I'd be swapping them out for two primaris lightning fighters decked out with ground attack auguries and kraken missiles - this will give you that much needed anti super heavies + will help you deal with things that threaten your palatines such as melee dreads.

You'll need to fork out extra points so I'd drop the plasma support squad along with some little things like nuncio + vexillia's on the tactical marines. You'll end up with some points to spare I think.

Firstly can I say thanks for the feedback! It's really appreciated!

The look doesn't appeal to me. Bulky and defensive, not sleek and elegant. But definitely noted.I used some Phalanx Warder shields to make a unit of Emperor's Children Breachers. They're still large and bulky, but they're a lot more elegant than the regular boarding shields

From a gaming perspective plasma pistols are massively over-costed. I agree, but I like the look. I will see what I can get if I drop all things like this...

The Praetor is 217pts by himself. That's a lot. He is, but I don't think there's much I want to cut... Fair enough. If he is going to stay with the Command Squad then at least consider dropping one of the Grenade Harnesses as one will work for both the Praetor and the squad.

Yeah, this unit is for the Legion Champion. I know Power Swords really add up, but I don't want these guys stuck in a protracted combat, so anything to help prevent that is welcome. Funnily enough, Palatine Blades are best if they're stuck in combat for two phases. If you assault on your turn and wipe out a squad then they'll be stuck in the open during the enemy's next shooting phase (and they're only T4 W1 with a 3+ save...). If you stay locked in combat during you're assault phase, but manage to break/wipe out the enemy in his combat phase then they'll be free to assault again in your next turn.

Phoenix Terminator Squad [290pts]: 4x Phoenix Terminators, Sonic Shriekers

. Pheonix Champion: Grenade Harness

If these guys are Deep Striking they will be very vulnerable on the turn they come down. Yeah... but if he's shooting at these he's not shooting at something else... well, at least that's the theory. Noted. That's true, but they're not that tough considering they only have the 5++ with their Tartaros armour. In addition to that they can't assault or shoot in the turn that they Deep Strike so the enemy will either be able to assault them in his turn (and if he assaults you with a 2+ save unit you're in trouble because the Phoenix Spears will only be AP3) or move further away out of their assault range while shooting them.

Leviathan Dreadnoughts and Legion Veteran Tacticals with Combi-meltas and 'Machine Killers' are both good choices for tackling heavy vehicles and Knights. The Leviathan can also do well against many of the Primarchs.

Cataphractii Terminators with Chain-fists are also great for tackling vehicles, but of course they need a transport to be effective, and they probably don't really fit your theme.

Thank you all for the input. This is what I've decided on -

Looks good! I hope you're not planing to run a 200pt Praetor in a 5 man Tactical Support Squad... he needs a bit more protection than that, especially considering that they will be drop-podding right on top of the enemy to make the most of their melta-guns, and then standing around in the open during your opponent's next turn.

I was, thinking he would then lead them into combat to prevent them from getting shot!

However, I was speaking with a friend and I think actually he'll be joining the Palatine Blades in their pod.

I'm also considering the following changes (though costly in terms of ££) -

(1) Drop the Master of Signals (plus some points savings) for a squad of Sky Hunters.

(2) Drop the Master of Signals (plus some points savings) for a kharybdis for the Leviathan!

Yeah, the Palatine Blades are a much better unit for him! They're still a relatively 'soft' unit, but much better than the support squad. The fact that the Dreadclaw is an assault vehicle means that he should be able reach combat without facing too much shooting, and the larger squad size is a big plus.

In the Support Squad he'd be very vulnerable because you can't assault out of a regular Legion Drop Pod, so once the unit lands and shoots its meltas it will be extremely vulnerable to all enemy shooting (and even assault).

The Kharybdis would certainly improve the potency of the Leviathan, but I'd go for the Sky Hunters because you had them in you original list and because they fit the Emperor's Children fluff. However, I would consider giving the Leviathan a shooting weapon such as the Cyclonic Melta-lance to give him a bit more fire-power on the turn he pods in. While the Dreadnought Drop Pod is an 'Assault Vehicle' you still can't assault on the turn that it lands, so a more powerful shooting weapon (the Phosphex Discharger is an excellent weapon, but only against infantry) would help the Leviathan make an impact (excuse the pun) as soon as it lands :tu:
