Brothers-after a false start years ago I am ready to play 40k. I have a good collection of Space Wolves and a good portion are painted. 8th edition seems like a good place to start. I'm about to start work on my box of Wolf Guard in Terminator armor and am at a quandary on how to equip them. I have read the excellent "Post release roundtable what worked and what didn't" thread on this forum and maybe have been pointed in the right direction. I want my WG terminators to have a dual role where they can shoot effectively and be formidable in melee. I have Arjac Rockfist and a Land Raider Crusader though Teleport Strike-ing them sounds really, really cool. A thunder hammer costs the same as a power fist and the TH does 3 damage instead of 1d3 so that seems like the better weapon. For shooting the storm bolter is only 2 points but a combi-plasma seems pretty lethal even though it is considerably more expensive. I'm thinking TH and combi-plasma on 5 WG terminators may be the way to go but is it too many points for something that's going to die anyway? How would you experienced Wolves equip your WG terminators if you wanted to make them effective at both ranged attacks and melee?

You will want at least 2 of 5 termies to have storm shields in case of high AP attacks. I'd give the other 3 combi-plasmas. I also wouldnt give them all THs, as that gets prohibitively expensive. I'd probably go 2 TH/SS, 3 with wolf claw/C-P. This will still make them fairly expensive, but it will still take some effort to take them down.

See Its really hard to know exactly what will work best now.

I think the standard mixed load out like suggested will work well they always have.

But i also think with the new edition it even makes Standard termies viable.

If you think about them in terms of cost vs expect points killed. 10 Termies with power weapons and stornbolters can output 40 shots and then maybe charge. Power swords are beast as well.

i think bog standard termies are worth a go.

I would always upgrade from power swords to frost swords/wolf claws, as S5 is so much better than S4 with the new wound formula.

I'm currently in the process of making some "cheap" teminators, as in just the Stormbolter and non-power fists/hammers. With 4 shots per terminator at Rapidfire range, they may be more effective and more cheaper than a full squad of Grey Hunters in a Drop Pod with bolters. Throw them against regular infantry for maximum effect.

Bear in mind that we are not "Stuck" with a powerfist unlike regular termies. And a Wolf Claw is better than a Frost sword, just slightly more expensive only. And there are plenty of Wolf Claws in the WG Terminator sprues.

I picked up a couple of boxes of WG termies from someone who quit the hobby and I have not got round to making them up as I could not make up my mind.

Now I think I have decided and I will go for a cheap squad with 4 SBs and FB/WC and 1 AC/CF. This squad will be for dropping into cover to hose vulnerable units while still packing a punch in Assault and being cheaper than regular Termies.

The other squad will be full TH/SS led by Arjac and a Wolf Priest in a LRC. Sure they are expensive but they should be able to drop even a Knight if they get the charge. :biggrin.:
