Looking good so far. If I may recommend something, add more wash to the recesses of the tabard and then highlight the folds to make the whole thing pop out a bit more. Any plans for the sword's colour?

Also, have fun in your game!

Absolutely! I admire your painting, so your recommendations are welcome. I agree, the tabard is mundane and needs some work. I've also tried applying some nuln wash to a few models and it has turned out nice, I may try that here as well.

Sword colour... hmm. I'm not sure yet. I've never painted a power weapon, let alone THE black sword so I'm a bit intimidated. Suggestions?

Thank you! I look forward to it.

I find Agrax Earthshade to be a better for "tan" fabric (tabards, purity seals etc.) than Nuln. The latter leaves a dirty look, which is not something I'm aiming at.

I'm experimenting with painting power weapons now; but the Black Sword could be left black. Mine is silver, but I'm not sure about how it looks and am considering tweaking it by leaving the middle section with the engraving silver and the edges of the blade black. I imagine that this should look cool.

I normally use Seraphim Sepia wash... it gives a more classic artwork style look to the robes I'm painting, and usually just colors the highlights w/ thinned Dheneb Stone...

here's a sample of result:

MCOip1L.jpg

That's my method anyway... but it's up to you on what kind of shading you want for your cloaks and tabards, if you want to go for a little more darker and more of a used cloak look, then Arghax, if its newer, then Sepia, if you want white cloaks, then Nuln Oil but thinner, and if you want cloth that looks like a GW painter painted it... then: Duncan Paints St. Celestine, time stamp that covers robes...

The sepia is actually pretty cool... I usually go agrax, so I agree with you Brother Cristopher. The nuln oil was meant for the black armor :).

So, the apocalypse game was incredibly fun. The 8 hours went by incredibly fast.

Unfortunately it was a defeat for the imperium, however we nearly rid the planet of the Xeno scum. We played a scenario where at the end of each battle round you tally up how many objectives you control and get that many points.

We also played with random events after every round. Twice "time froze" and gave everyone the chance to count the points they had again, so they received 9 extra points that way which was rough.

I'll post a few pictures later but am embarrassed by the lack of painted models.

The EC, captain, and his squad of sword brothers managed to wipe a squad of 30 hormagaunts and 20 boys with relative ease.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to send off my EC to greater challenges without jepordizing our flank.

Another random event plopped a squad or 30 ork boys in the middle of two crusader squads and some LRBT. Needless to say the crusaders were happy.

Brothers,

I intend on taking this list to battle and believe it to be fun and have some sort of competitive edge to it. Thoughts?

Of course, it can easily be made more competitive if I were to drop the pod, and perhaps even grimaldus, but it's what I own.

The EC and Captain would ride with the company veterans in the pod, grimaldus and the LC vets in the Rhino, the las/plas crusaders for back line objectives and then finally the three blobs and halbrecht marching up the middle with the standard. The standard will have the relic banner in order for the marines to be immune to BS and have a chance to shoot/hit again on a 3+.

Thoughts? I think it's awesome but I have yet to try it. My meta isn't incredibly competitive btw.

I have no experience in making lists, but this looks like an absolute fun to play with. Make sure to let us know how you've done.

My attempts at 'constructive' (I hope that it's at least not 'destructive') feedback:

1. Very brave of you for taking a drop pod with its insane point cost; I'd swap it for a Rhino or Razorback.

2. I like the idea of ablative wounds, so I'd swap some of those dual lightning claws on Vanguards/Sword Brothers for something cheaper and with the saved points get another special weapon, say a thunder hammer for their 'sergeant'.

3. I'm not sure about the standard bearer in a list as yours; it seems to me that he's best used for supporting backfield units since you potentially get the most out of the extra shooting attack if it's a lascannon or missile launcher; for short-range shooting and melee, the standard seems like a waste. Since you have so many characters in your army, maybe pick an apothecary or two to help them stay alive? On the other hand, passing morale checks automatically is quite nice.

An exciting game! No pictures because I'm ashamed of my "grey tide" but my friend encouraged me to prime em up and paint... so soon. I played the above list.

I played against my friends salamanders.

His list:

Vulkan

Captain

Lieutenant x2

Librarian

x2 intercessor

x1 tactical with combo flamer, flamer, melta

x1 hellblasters

x1 sternguard ejth heavy flamers, flamers, melts

x1 ancient

x1 inceptors

x1 aggressor squad with flamers

x1 apothecary

x1 stormraven

x1 rhino

Turn 1:

Sal: flies the stormraven over, moves the aggressors, rhino and characters up.

Shooting takes out some crusaders, my rhino with grimaldus and the LC vets wanting - who are trying to flank up the left.

BT: unload everything (almost) on the stormraven, taking it out. Out jumps Vulkan, apothecary, and the flame boys (sternguard)

Kill a few more steenguard with another crusader squad.

Plasma cannon shoots at the hellblasters, overcharge. 3 shots, roll a 1, dies, but gets another 3 shots due to the standard. Honestly, I don't see why the standard isn't in every list... I'll never stop saying it.

The the overcharging plasma cannon takes out 4 or the hellblasters.

I charge into Vulkan, the remaining sternguard and the apothecary with two of my crusader squads.

Flamers hurt, especially on salamanders.

A few died to overwatch. Vulkan is a beast with a 3++ but manage to take a wound. The Sternguard get wiped.

Turn 2:

Sal:falls back with Vulkan. Annihilates the two crusader squads with mass fire, literally.

Flamer aggressors seem awesome. Roasted the crusaders alive.

Intercessors down 5 LC vets scrambling into cover after their ride for demolished. Looking at once squad of 5 for vengeance.

BT: charge up halbrexht and the final crusader squad up the middle to deal with the pesky aggressors and character blob.

The final hellblasters dies to a lascannon shot, two aggressors go down to shooting.

The crusader squad and halbrecht charge into the final aggressor, losing two to overwatch.

Now, here is where I committed the biggest tactical mistake of the game. I thought I'd be clever and consolidate into his tactical marines to avoid being shot to bits next turn. I consolidate. He swings back at my crusaders and halbrecht. These dudes are amped up on their psychic juice (I completely forgot) so they have two attacks each, str 5, t 5... they kill all but one crusader, halbrecht is now on three wounds...I had 10 crusaders left, they hit 19 times, and did 19 wounds! So I essentially lost a full crusader squad for the price of nothing, as halbrecht was the one to kill the aggressor.

On the bright side, my 4 LC vets charge the 5 intercessors and wipe the unit. These guys, with grimaldus nearby, can do some SERIOUS dmg.

Turn 3:

Sal: DS the inceptors, mop up the LC vets and put two wounds on gimaldus. He finishes off the crusader and puts another wound on Halbrecht.

He smites halbrecht. I attempt to deny the witch, I fail. He immediately rolls dmg, but I call out as he's letting go that I'm re-rolling. He does 3 dmg... we agree that he does three dmg if I fail. The preassure is on.

The Emperor protects. Halbrecht lives.

BT: the drop pod comes down providing some needed reinforcements. Out charge the company vetetans, the captain, and emperors champion. They all make their 9" charges... vulkan falls.

Grimaldus charges the incrptors, wiping them.

The Salamander's will to fight is failing. They concede. (We called it as time was running out, but my friend said he conceded and didn't see himself able to do much more)

Black Templar victory.

Great game, lots of fun and good laughs.

Salamanders are really strong.

We played big guns never tire. We were each sitting on two objectives, he had first blood, I had warlord and HS kill.

I don't think I'll ever leave the ancient at home, too good.

Brother Cristopher, I agree with you 100%. Rhino or razorback would be more efficient. But I took the drop pod for the rule of cool + I only have the one Rhino :).

After the match, do believe that a full unit of LC vets is a point sink, giving a few two chainswords would allow for the TH on the sarg, like you suggest.

As for the standard, I'm sure everyone knows how I feel about them by now :p

As for the apothecary.. I good investment... perhaps the reduction in LC will give me the 50pts needed! Though I think my characters would need to be positioned a bit closer? I'd need practice.

Thanks for taking the time to read. WIP pics soon.. promise!

Hi brothers,

I've been horrible at updating my crusade thread with painting, but I have about 30 marines in the white shoulder pads phase, dull stuff so will post when it gets fun.

I played a game against some kraken nids today and I learned a valuable lesson.

Don't underestimate first turn charges.

Deployment is an incredibly important part of the game. I deployed very poorly but learned a lot from it so that's good.

Thirdly, there will be a tournament at my LGS, 1850 pts.

I can't confirm what armies will be there 100%, but there may be skitarri, nids, daemons, SW, nurgle, orks, chaos, maybe necrons.

Some of which will be trying to make their list as competitive as possible.

List can't change from game to game.

I know that if I go pure BT I won't be going into this tourney expecting to win every game, though I could be wrong.

That said, to increase my odds I was thinking of mixing in some IG.

At my disposal:

BT:

Plenty of marines with mixed weapons.

x2 dreadnought

x1 stormraven

x1 LRC (can proxy for lascannon)

x1 pred

x1 rhino

x1 drop pod

x1 razorback

IG:

Tons of guardsmen

x5 LR tanks

x1 basilisk

x2 chimera

x2 taurox (prime)

x2 scout sentinels

Dozens of scions

So I was thinking mimicking the gathering storm, having cadians in the back line blasting away as o have some Templar charge up the field.

Or have one kill squad of BT, sword brothers, diving in the back line while the majority of units are IG.

Thoughts brothers?

Anything will help.

Cheers

i would pick templars to be the mobile part as you said, but wouldn't let them charge up the board but be driven closer so they can hit them with their swords!

pick a fire base of Guard with tanks and basilisks screened by guardsmen (read: meatshield) while the templars go grab objectives from rhinos/razorbacks/stormravens.

If you wanna go really competitive, a "deathstar" from the stormraven might suffice for templar chopiness, while the guardsmen and tanks hold the rear and pound the enemy.

For more cheese, add scions with plasma to drop insted of maybe heavy weapons or a few of the company vets... Holy Emperor i feel dirty now :P

Haha, thanks for the insight brother. Unfortunately the points for reduced to 1500 so that we can finish games. That said, I don't think a LRC or a Stormraven will be viable anymore. Unless I got full Templar which I still might.

I intend on making a few practice lists and report back.

i would pick templars to be the mobile part as you said, but wouldn't let them charge up the board but be driven closer so they can hit them with their swords!

A Black Templars tank should wield its own swords, mounted as bayonets under its gun barrels- as do the flyers, skimmers, and other vehicles. As I said, vehicles in the Black Templars armory are de facto battle brothers, and no Black Templar is so cowardly as to keep himself beyond the enemy's reach- or allow the enemy to remain beyond his reach.

Brothers, it has been too long since I've posted any updates on my crusade! That is not to say that I've been laying dormant! The crusade has encountered several xenos and heretic scum in this unfamiliar sector of space. The crusade has been successful in most of it's engagements but was forced to tactically withdraw from some positions.

Here is my most recent painting endeavor. I will make an effort to provide battle reports and images in the future!
