Had my first few games of 8th ed. with the GSC (previously having tried out my orks, only to hit a brick wall of Deathwatch frag cannons, Blood Angels getting their teeth kicked in by Scions, and AdMeck getting mauled by Tyrannids) Here's my observations after a 1500 pt game against Spehss Mehreens.

1) Purestrain genestealers. Good God almighty. (in a good way) These were the MVPs, 10 of them tearing apart a Venerable Dreadnaught, a Land Speeder, and a Space Marine Captain during their rampage.

2) Hybrid Metamorphs. Good God almighty. (in a bad way) They pretty much seem to be more expensive Acolytes without the special weapons.

3) Acolytes... I'm sure its been said, THIS DRILL IS THE DRILL THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!!!

4) A 5+ save seems to make a huge difference compared to the ork's 6+, especially with how common AP is.

5)  Iconward + 2 blobs of Neophytes = a lot of survivable dakka.

6) GSC pure is lacking Heavy Support. The answer? LEMAN RUSSES!

I think running pure Genestealer Cults in 8th is a mistake. You will be knee-capping yourself. You have the rule to add in a detachment of Astra Militarium and stay battle forged. You should be doing just that. Make use of the melee specialists of the Cult and ranged superiority of the AM. It is a brutal combination.

You can even run the vet squads that they are tossing about.

Remember anything with the keyword Astra Militarum is fair game.

One huge benefit from running allied IG (other than the tanks) is access to cheap blobs of infantry to hold objectives.  While you can do this with Neophytes (who are far better fighters than Conscripts), the smaller unit size and expense to make them "Fearless" (Patriach, etc.) doesn't compare as well with massive Conscript blobs + Commissars.  It's not a far stretch to make this fit from a background perspective, either; big blobs of "brood brother" Conscripts with liberal application of Neophyte conversion bits and a hybrid Commissar, preaching perverted Imperial Creed to his minions (and enforcing that creed with his Bolt Pistol :smile.:).

Hmm, now I have some really cool ideas for conversions . . . :biggrin.:

I have tried to play a pure GSC army in several battles and lost all my battles big! I think before we get a codex that GSC is a very hard army to win with and if you win, propably you then only run genestealers which becomes boring (at least for me). So I will wait for codex until I pick them up again.

Acolytes lost couple of rending claws attacks and really feel weaker without special weapons... those get pricey but it's quite amusing suicide charging with this glass canon unit :P

Anyone tried some well working list with tyranids detachment? Using GSC as your main one and tyranids as support... Which units from Tyranid roster could fill some gaps in GSC? Tanky monsters or gaunt hordes..hmm

I'm doing a bit of experimenting with cults plus bid combos. First game didn't go well but I didn't really think my army through very well. (The Tyranids were kind of just a mix of units, didn't really do much apart from the Genestealers which would have been better served being cheaper Purestrains anyway.) I think in theory you could do well to take a mini cult detachments like the vanguard or spearhead to add in some fire support/ambushing units. You could also use cheap troops and hqs to be a few more command points.

Errata changed Purestrain points to 10pts per model, same price as in Tyranid army :P

Yes, but the Tyranid ones have to pay for rending claws, so are more expensive. I assume eventually Purestrains will be adjusted up but for now they are cheaper than their hive fleet cousins.
