Well, I began my Custodes Army this past weekend. Here are the first two !

Obviously, until I can get a Custodes HQ, or substitute something I can't pull the points, but aiming for +4000. I ordered a Contemptor Dread from Forge World this weekend, can't wait to convert and paint it up !!!

Lots of hidden colour in there too which is ace. Silver helms are subtle but cool too!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

 

The bases are actual "Grey Shale" rocks. I selected the sizes and patterns I wanted and glued to them to the bases.

Next, I washed them with 3 coats of Nuln Oil Gloss  Opps, I mean Agrax Earthshade Gloss, ensure you get in the cracks. Then light dry brush with copper, or the color you want, to bring out the texture. Then I went back and washed again to show more texture.

Then just add the vegetation, WWS "Summer Tufts", glued into the cracks. Was pretty simple !

Moved pictures here based on Praefect Scoiorum's recommendation.

 

Finished up the first Contemptor Dread for my army. A bit of a beast to paint, but fun. Added a kheres assault cannon in place of the shield. Adding more firepower to the army, so perhaps 3-4 more of these guys, perhaps a multi-melta Dread too. Have 13 more Guardians to paint as well, when work allows.

I've never particularly liked the contemptor pattern dreadnought but that one looks amazing!

Below are the next models in the chute to paint. Vexilla, another Guardian and the Shield Captain. After that, another Shield Captain, Guardian with Sword and Board, then 3 with Guardian Blades. Finally, the Ixion Hale model, but going to call him Constantine Valdor (dependent on someday getting HQ rules for these guys). 

 

...and have decided to add a Culexus Assassin.

These are beautiful. The bases are stand-out lovely. I really like the overall effect. May I ask why you're going for sword/shield rather than the iconic Guardian Spears?

Appreciate the comments ! I will have 1 x squad with Guardian Spears, but in the end it came down to what I thought would improve the unit the most even though I agree, the Spears are very iconic and personally prefer how they look to the swords and boards. 

 

Both the Sword and Spear are AP -3, Damage D3. The strength +1 for the Spear isn't a huge deal, basically Strength 5 v 6. The Spear does give better shooting, but in CC you get the 2 shots from the sword. I don't plan on using Guardian Squads for much shooting, but want to get them in combat asap. My thinking is the +3 Inv Save from the Shield increases unit survival from ranged attacks and in cc and hopefully outweights the damage output I could inflict during the shooting phase with the Spears. Haven't tried them in a game yet, but this is my thesis....until I hear differently or someone pushes a better argument.

Fair enough! I thought it might be something like that. I'm really curious about Custodes as I don't have any and haven't seen any being used at the local GW where I play most of my games.

Hahaha, a few more months before the whole army is complete. Work just takes too much of my time, sadly.

 

My larger concern is if / when they allow 30k models with Custodes......it will be more months of painting adding Jet Bikes, Grav Tanks, and the new Custodes Flyer !!!

Funnily enough the most recent WD has a teaser for a BL book coming soon that focuses on the Custodes (and Sisters of Silence) being roused to war in numbers for the first time since the Heresy.

 

Maybe it'll name drop a few 30k units to set a precedent!
