Valdr Fell-fist
I think that looks fantastic, some of the cleanest work I’ve seen on Primaris plate. thewarriorhunter
And we're done! Hoping to get the base done soon, I was sick the last couple of days so work is going to need catching up before I can justify hobby time... thewarriorhunter
FINALLY finished base coating the rest of my 100 pt KT. It's gray... but it's a light gray so it sucked. It ended up taking three thin coats and a few touch ups to get a good coat. Pretty sure I will not be expanding this to a 40k sized chapter until I get an airbrush. I was also pretty miffed at how many mold lines I found. I'm usually very good about removing them, I'm not sure how so many got neglected. I scraped a few off after the first coat of paint and am hoping that the paint will stick well enough on those tiny strips of exposed plastic. thewarriorhunter
I think I got my base process figured out... time will tell. I tried working with miliput today and it was not being agreeable with me. I remembered I had some air dry clay and it was a success. I cut the brim off a paper plate so I had a flat disposable surface to work on. Borrowed my wife's rolling pin to make the clay nice and level (which was something I couldn't do with the miliput). The pin I bought left a good impression. I think I should get all the bases I need out of this. The clay dries really hard so my plan is to cut out the basic shape/size of the base with my saw and file to fit flush. We shall see how that works out. It would be easier to cut them now while the clay is soft but I'm worried about the clay catching and ruining by tearing chunks out of the clay. thewarriorhunter
I made hobby cookies! I ended up tracing the top of a base onto a piece of cardstock and used that as a template to cut out the tops of the bases. They're a little thicker than I think I want so once they've fully cured I'll sand them down with some medium grit paper. I probably could have made them the actual base on not the top but I'd be worried about them cracking over time. I also realized (too late) that I could have reused the clay that was 'waste'. I wasn't sure how this clay would work but I think next time I can cut it right away. Then I'll take the excess clay and reroll it out to make more bases from it. For now this should do for a good sized command roster. thewarriorhunter
Made more bases tonight. The first batch were cut wrong and looked terrible on the bases. I also tried my hand at the symbol for my Kill Team. First time I've ever free handed anything. I think it turned out OK given the size I was working with. I've included the flower my wife painted for reference. Let me know what you think and I'd love any suggestions you might have. I only did the inner purple layer of her flower because I don't think I could do the whole flower and make it look good inside the small area of the shoulder pad. thewarriorhunter
Hobby Cookie update. I made a new batch and cut them at an angle opposite to the previous one. Before they sat on the base and looked off. This time I cut them to have the same slope as the actual base. I sanded it down on a piece of sand paper to reduce the height. After gluing onto the base I cut/sanded/filed the edges down to be flush with the base. A little hobby putty later and I have a pretty seamless transition from base to clay. I'll prime it this weekend and try and figure out a paint scheme. This first pictures shows the thickness difference vs sanded and unsanded. The next batch I'll try and make a little thinner so this step can be avoided/shortened. Second shows the gap filling, last picture is the end result that awaits priming. thewarriorhunter
So glad the boards are back up! I managed to finish my first Intercessor Gunner and my Comms specialist is currently being glued together as painting was finished the other night. If Borderlands 2 wasn't so distracting I'd probably have the whole Kill Team done I still need to name my guys, I'm not sure what theme I want to go with. I'm leaning towards some time of Middle East/Hebrew/Judaic naming scheme since that's where Sicarii is derived from historically. In another forum I was talking with a fellow hobbyist who was also a history buff and new the history of the Sicarii well. He suggested I name their home world Masada since that was the desert fortress where the original Sicarii made their last stand. These guys are going to be fleet based so I believe their flagship will be called The Masada as an homage to real world history. It is very fitting because Masada was a nigh impregnable fortress and while the Romans did crack it, it took them a lot of time, effort, and manpower to do so. Here's the pictures of my first model done. I still need to varnish the model but we've had a lot of rain and humidity so I'm waiting so as to not fog up the varnish. I'm very happy with how he turned out. I'm tweaking a few things on subsequent models but overall I've got my scheme and methods down. And here's a sneak peak of my comm's arms: Grotsmasha, Vykes, deathspectersgt7 and 2 others 5 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336983-thewarriorhunters-plog-for-the-greater-good-commission/page/4/#findComment-5171612 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
Comms Specialist is done. I need to work on his base but it'll be raining all weekend so I won't have a chance to prime until next week. I also am going to stop painting the rest of these guys until I can seal them all. The base coat has a tendency to chip and I want to fix that. I'm not sure if it's the new primer I'm using, the paint color, or what but it's very annoying. I think sealing them up will help to protect them from my grubby hands as I paint them. I also forgot to paint the vents on his pack. I kind of like them as his base gray and may clean it up and leave it, or I'll paint them black... not sure yet. deathspectersgt7, Grim Dog Studios, Focslain and 4 others 7 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336983-thewarriorhunters-plog-for-the-greater-good-commission/page/4/#findComment-5172558 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
Spent some time hobbying with my son. He painted up his necrons while I worked on the base for my Comms Specialist. "Hey, what time are purging the heretics?" "I dunno, lemme check." I've got my base routine down and am really happy with it. It takes about six steps as shown in this picture and goes really quick aside from the drying time on the washes: My son painting up his kill team: Honda, deathspectersgt7, Vykes and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336983-thewarriorhunters-plog-for-the-greater-good-commission/page/4/#findComment-5173847 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
Got a little bit done last night when I got back from my work trip. The weather was finally nice enough (not 100% humidity) so I varnished up by two completed kill team members. I also put a light varnish on the rest of the models so that when I paint them I'm not rubbing off paint on their feet (which happened on my first couple). I also decided to paint up a drop pod fin to see what it looks like. I know pods can't carry primaris but I think it'll be cool as scenery and be great for a narrative kill team game for deployment. This is just base layers because I was playing around. I like it, but it obviously needs a lot of work with highlights and washes. thewarriorhunter
Painting this scheme is tedious but damn does it look good. One fin almost done. I use black on the pouches on my Primaris, I'm not sure if I should leave the black as is or go over it with a steel color and then wash/drybrush. I'm leaning towards leaving the two bars at the top of the fin black and making the exhaust grill and inner portion of the fin steel. I'm trying to be forward thinking with the interior. I've been waffling between black/steel or my Spectral Sicarii scheme. Here's the fin: And here's a Sons of Medusa pod that I really like. I think I may paint my grays where the greens are and stick with the blacks for the harnesses with maybe a light dry brush of steel. thewarriorhunter
These are some really nice models. I like the bases in particular, very nice. I appreciate the compliment! I think basing is really important to the model help to either elevate it to the next level or drag it down and make it look like crap. I always appreciate when I get basing compliments. thewarriorhunter
Fins are closer and they're all up to the same step in the process. I finished washing the steel this morning. All that's left is to edge highlight the gray and steel, then recess highlight/wash the blue. After that I'm sure I'll need to clean up the base layers a bit and I can call them done. thewarriorhunter
I've really enjoyed the discussion from GreyCrow's thread: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351151-axioms-of-victory-unconventional-rg-strategies/?do=findComment&comment=5190510 I've decided to give toy around with his ideas of sacrificial units to support the troops and put together a 650pt list with what I have. Everything will be painted except my captain . I have an unpainted VV model that I can use for him. I really want to play with only painted models and am almost at that point. If I ran my captain without a jump pack I'd have a painted model. Here's the list and my thoughts: ++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Space Marines) [41 PL, 649pts] ++ + HQ + Captain: Chainsword, Iron Resolve, Jump Pack, Master-crafted boltgun, The Armour Indomitus, Warlord + Troops + Scout Squad . Scout Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Boltgun . 3x Scout w/Boltgun . Scout w/Heavy Weapon: Heavy bolter Scout Squad: 5x Camo cloak . Scout Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Sniper rifle . Scout w/Heavy Weapon: Missile launcher . 3x Scout w/Sniper Rifle: 3x Sniper rifle Tactical Squad . 9x Space Marine . Space Marine Sergeant: Boltgun/Bolt pistol + Fast Attack + Assault Squad: Jump Pack . 2x Space Marine . Space Marine Sergeant: Chainsword, Plasma pistol . Space Marine w/Special Weapon . . Plasma Pistol & Chainsword: Plasma pistol . Space Marine w/Special Weapon . . Plasma Pistol & Chainsword: Plasma pistol + Heavy Support + Devastator Squad . Space Marine Sergeant: Boltgun . Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Plasma cannon . Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Heavy bolter . Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon . Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon I went with a captain over a LT because I'm hoping to flit him around between the devs and the assault squad. He can help support the devs for a turn or two and then keep up with the assault squad so they can overcharge the plasma. I'll have 20 models of troops on the table and am planning on combat squading the marines. Sniper scouts will be placed on a backfield objective and sit and take pot shots. Bolt gun scouts will deploy forward to grab an objective or deny area. Marines grab what they can. Devastators are there to draw fire and deal with anything big. Hopefully I can get them in cover with a good lane of fire. I normally run 2x LC and 2x ML but needed the points for the jump captain. I normally try to run the squad with either all 48" range weapons or 36" so nothings wasted but that can't be helped here. Assault squad will either be deployed and SFTS(scout move) to cover or help for a turn two drop. My plan is to use them to harass and bring the Captain up to support them over charging. A couple thoughts on changes/tweaks: I could drop the HB/PC from the dev squad and replace the Assault squad with Inceptors. It's one more wound and a lot of dakka and range but less AP than the current setup. I could also drop the tac squad bodies down to fit the ML's into the dev squad. There's probably a few other things I could do but I've got some time to play with this. I'd love to field more primaris but I want to paint those up as my Spectral Sicarii and I've got too many other projects going on right now to dedicate time to getting a small force of them done. thewarriorhunter
Tonight I got some more highlighting done on the pod fins. They've really taken a back seat as I work on the Stuffed Fables minis. The three fins on the left need the final white highlight and then on too blue. The two on the right still need all the highlights. I'm getting faster with this scheme and techniques so I'm hoping the base of the pod goes a lot faster than these have. thewarriorhunter
Finally done with the fins... took way longer than it should have but I don't mind since painting is my zen. thewarriorhunter
Started on the pod body. Base coat of gray is done (I think). I'm not really sure what to do with the inside of the doors. I know a lot of people use hazard stripes but I'm not a fan. I'd think a genetically engineered super soldier would know where the doors of the pod are when he's stepping on to board and rushing off in a fight. I think I may just add the gray to the inside lip, or I may go steel all over, not sure yet but I've got a couple days to think before I start painting again. thewarriorhunter
Started on the highlights/recess washing today. Got about 50% of the first highlight done and all of the recess washing. My hand was starting to ache from trying to hold steady lines so I called it a day. I will say with all of the news from the weekender I'm wondering if I'll regret this choice... I would imagine new Primaris transports are in the works and I wonder if a primaris drop pod will eventually come out.
