So I'm happy enough with how my Purifier experiment went (batrep coming shortly) that I'll probably put it as a permanent formation in my list building for my Knights, but it needs a third elite slot to be a proper detachment and I've decided on a Dreadnought.

Problem is, I'm not sure what kind of dreadnought. Having just raided Warhammer World, I can currently build

A Doomglaive.

A Melta / CCW dread

A Lascannon / CCW dread

A Melta / twin autocannon dread

A Lascannon / twin autocannon dread

A twin autocannon / twin autocannon dread.

I'm thinking of loading it into the Stormraven, so I'm thinking either the Melta / CCW or the Doomglaive would be really practical as each would give me a bit of extra short range punch.

On the other hand, the lascannon / autocannon or the double autocannon dreads are excellent for ranges vehicular mayhem. I've run the dual autocannon Dread off and on since fifth edition and its always a solid if not always spectacular.

Thoughts?

Doomglaive, not close.

Dreadnoughts in general are really fearsome in melee. Dreadnoughts with ranged weapons only are not that efficient as you are wasting the attacks and strenght in their profile.

The main point about hybrid dreadnoughts, specially in grey knights, is that you want to focus on one side of the opponent's army and keep the army mostly together, so they sinergise better. Also you can't use your smite if you are far away from the enemy.

Just compare the double autocannon dread (venerable) with the doomglaive. The doomglaive will be able to benefit from Gm rerolls usually, so 6 "autocannon" shots at 3+ rerollable plus an storm bolter at 2+ rerollable vs 8 autocannon shots at 2+. The doomglaive's shooting is not that much worse. Now add the smite and the fearsome melee ability and the difference is clear.

A CCW + melta dread is pretty good too, but a bit more expensive and less versatile.

I guess figure out what style of army you like to play. Do you like shooty armies / gun line armies? Do you like armies that get up in your opponent's face?

What is your meta like? Do you play against horde armies? Do you find yourself going up against flyers a lot?

Once you figure that out, start to fill out your army. When you go to add your dreadnought, you might ask "What is my list lacking?" "What can I put on this dreadnought that will round this all out."

It's never quite as simple as "Always take X" or "You should put Y because you might go up against Z."

No easy answers.

Yeah, that's a cluster cuss.

I've been using a sm dread. Now with the codex out its list options. So instead ill go back to using the older index version. But at new prices!

Hell if they mess up our new codex we can just use 'better' versions from the index!

And as they are 'grey knights' and like the sm example still have chapter tactics they won't impact detachments or strategums in any way.

Yeah that change where Dreads lose weapon options is...odd, to say the least. Dunno why they even did it. Potentially to sell Redemptor kits?

I guess we shall see how our Dreads get rebalanced in our codex release. If they stay exactly the same I'll be happy, I think they're fine as is. Some of our unique units need a bit of reworking though.

They mentioned the new codexes will only have options that can be readily purchased from GW, so things like the twin autocannon from FW isnt included by default.

Speaking of the Redemptor, looking at it next to the regular boxnought - its huge! Literally twice the size. For those GK players who've hated the NDK model, the Redemptor would be a suitable chassis for finally converting a Dreadnought into a NDK. Between the Redemptor and Telemon (from FW), Dreadnoughts are now the same height and bulk of NDKs!
