My opinion is the maul is best for most people, but the fist is certainly an option on the guys with higher weapon skill. Edit: Other than damage a power fist is not that much better as strength 6 isn't enough better than strength 5 most of the time; but it looks cool. 

 

Strength 5 is a sweet spot where you can wound most things in the game on a 5+ at worst. So the maul is nice if you want to be able to hurt just about anything. You will wound on a 5+ up to toughness 9, and there are few things in game with toughness higher than that. My thinking is the maul gives you an option for when you need that last ditch wound on a carnifex or land raider. A power fist is only better for toughness 10 and 11 targets, so why bother other than looks. 

 

The guard HQ choices and elites are actually not horrible in close combat. A company commander with power maul and plasma pistol should be able to actually hold its own pretty well up close.

I feel like a lot of people are ignoring armour penetration. Yes a maul and a fist wound on 3+ but one cuts through armour no problem. The axe is probably the best compromise but in the end i fell every power weapon has a use, I don't think you can go wrong.

I agree the Maul seems to be the best all rounder

I still like power firsts especially on Lord Commissars, power swords are cheap and at AP-4 still somewhat scary against most things.

Trickiest part with the maul is finding suitable ones ;)

Against a GEQ
Axe: 0,66 wounds, 0,66 wounds after saves.
Sword: 0,5 wounds, 0,5 wounds after saves.
Maul: 0,66 wounds, 0,55 wounds after saves.

Axe wins, Sword the worst.

 

Against MEQ
Axe: 0,5 wounds, 0,33 after saves.

Sword; 0,33 wounds, 0,27 after saves.

Maul: 0,66 wounds, 0,33 after saves.

 

Axe and Maul tied for best, Sword the worst.

 

Against a TEQ

Axe; 0,5 wounds, 0,25 after saves.

Sword; 0,33 wounds, 0,22 after saves.

Maul: 0,66 wounds, 0,22 after saves.

 

Axe wins. Sword and Maul tied for worst.

Against T5 3+
Axe: 0,33 wounds, 0,22 after saves.
Sword: 0,33 wounds, 0,275 after saves.
Maul: 0,5 wounds, 0,25 after saves.

Sword wins, Axe the worst.

Against T6-T7 3+
Axe: 0,33 wounds, 0,22 after saves.

Sword: 0,17 wounds, 0,14 after saves.

Maul: 0,33 wounds, 0,17 after saves.

Axe wins, Sword the worst.

Against T8+ 3+

Axe: 0,17 wounds, 0,11 wounds after saves.
Sword: 0,17 wounds, 0,14 wounds after saves.
Maul: 0,33 wounds, 0,17 after saves.

 

Maul wins, Axe is the worst.

Total:
 

Axe first: 4
Sword first: 1
Maul first: 2

Axe worst: 2
Sword worst: 4
Maul worst: 1

 

TLDR

Stay away from the Power Sword, it's more often than not the worst and almost never the best.

Power Maul vs Power Axe is almost a complete tossup, with the axe being better against 2 more target than the Maul, but also being the worst against 1 more target than the maul. Basically the Axe will be the best weapon in most scenarios, but the Maul will almost never be the worst, but even if it is (against TEQ's), it's not worse than the Powersword.

My experience backs up the math above, I've found Mauls to be very solid! 

 

I've never wished for a sword and only a couple of times I've thought an Axe would be amazing right now. 

 

Overall I go with Mauls, being Str5 is just great! Makes the characters seem powerful. IMO
