^ This. 'Unrelated Industrial Incident' is probably Commisariat or Inquisitional code for a regiment purge to prevent the fell influence of Chaos.

God forbid we get another bloody army from the Eastern Fringe.

Humans don't generally understand xenos very well - remember that they can't tell the difference between Dark and Craftworld Eldar - so it really could have been just about anything. "Mutated" could mean a Haemonculus's work, or even just that they were weird, not necessarily Chaos.

I interpreted the "industrial accident" as they actually got wiped out by said xenos (otherwise why redact that part) and the accident was just concocted just to explain why they're not around anymore.

Who's to say what they were. The galaxy is a big place. Best pray it wasn't the Rangdan. It could be something new on the part of GW, or just something to add a little more mystery to the setting. For my part I like seeing these things, helps to remind you that there is a lot going on in the Imperium.

Yeah, the books are full of weird xenos species turning up that never get rules, or art, or even names.

"And on Blorgquist IV my brothers and I encountered something weird and horrible. It ate seven of us before Brother Garin discovered it was deathly afraid of the color yellow and drove it off with his lucky hanky. Alas, when we were later set upon by five-legged xenos raiders, the lucky hanky was of no avail, and Brother Garin was dragged screaming into the hideous night of that Emperor-forsaken world."

(Not an example from the books.)

Well people keep bringing up the idea of chaos T'au since the 4th Sphere Expansion fleet got sucked in by the warp....as much as I'd hate that idea I can't deny it's a possibility.

Would they be devoted to the Greater Bad?

Darn. I wanted to use the Snotticus Removicus of Brother Garrin relic.

My first thought about "strangely mutated xenos" was Nurgle followers of some sort, or Plague Marines. It's Konor with Death Guard, after all.

I have mixed feelings about another Faction being introduced. It's healthy for the setting in general, I think....BUT they need to balance the game and make sure all existing Factions are fed and burped first. There's already another issues of favoritism. It's not like GW at all to ice all its attention to a new shiny at the complete neglect of existing items with plenty of life and interest left...

My first thought would be that it's a naive interpretation of daemons rather than a reference to anything truly new.

Could be genestealer cult

The problem with both interpretations is that RS talked about demons and chaos/gene cults openly before, so I can't see it being either (though the joke would certainly fit). In fact, given what was covered before it's either red herring or something utterly bizarre.

sounds like a genestealer cult or chaos, I wouldn't look to much into it. I feel that they would make a real teaser for something like this if it was supposed to be new.

on pure speculation:

lets say they are teasing the 4th expansion sphere lost in space style... have the 4th time travel all around so they've really been gone for millennia, now they show up and are strange and alien even to tau. and They fight against the greater good, but not the integrating of xenos to fight chaos and such.

a neat thing to do, would be to have the tau 4th sphere time travel back in time. They end up meeting the Interex, and the Interex educate the Tau on the Chaos as the ultimate enemy. The greater good in the 4th is altered, the Greater good against chaos. The interex start to repair the 4th expansion spheres ships when horus and the great crusade approach, some interex leave with the tau, and somehow get sucked back into the warp. They pop up randomly until the reappear during the 2nd age of primarchs.
