I'm considering adding some mkIV marines to my current 40k collection, as i have loved the armour since its release, and now that i'm actively back in the hobby and swiftly painting all remaining units (by my standard anyway, about one marine every 2 days) so i thought i'd turn to my fellow ultramarines for some advice.

When i get some mkIV and possibly mkIII armour how do i build them to be compatible with both 40k and 30k as i'd like to be able to jump into 30k if and when i get enough ready for those times when i want to dive into a long list of rules and so on.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: any recommendations for units are also welcome

As somebody who is playing a 30K army with 8th edition rules, hopefully I can be of some help. Tactical marines are generally the same, aside from not having the special or heavy weapon in 30K, with them only being equipped with bolters. So if youre after tactical marines you are probably best off magnetizing those two marines in your squads to be equipped with bolters instead of their special weapons.

I find Sternguard make a nice stand in for 30K veteran squads, as these are armed similarly with two special weapons and the choice of combi weapons but the 30K veterans get access to close combat weapons.

If youre considering getting terminators, 30k termis get a few more options compared to their 40k counterparts but this is down to the equipment limits that come inside the plastic kit.

Not sure if that was the kind of info you are looking for but hopefully it helped at least a little bit!

You have covered the basics which helps alot, just means some careful planning as i move along, and look to make seperate heavy weapon squads that can be swap in for tactical weapons loadout.

So for an easy example:

10 standard marines

5 man plasmagun squad

5 man heavy bolter squad

Then i could swap a plasmagun and heavy bolter into the marines to make a tactical squad, put the standard marines into the plasma and HB as sgts for 40k to be company veterans and devastator respectively.
