Im currently looking for a way to speed up games with a hoard army and thought that as distance between models doesnt matter much with templates gone a solution would be to mount multiple models on one base/

As long as the bases accurately represented the size of the number of bases of the models being mounted would people have an issue with this?

It does matter for melee combat though.

If I charge a unit of 30 gaunts mounted on one base, every one of them counts as within 1" of my charging model. What happens when that charging model has an ability to attack all models within 1" of it?

Do you really want to lose a 30 strong unit of gaunts to a single attack?

Sorry for double post. My phone doesn't let me edit posts.

The reverse is also true. Distance measuring to determine how many models can fight is done from the base. 30 gaunts on one base would mean they can ALL fight, every time.

I would not be okay with all 30 of your dudes being able to hit a unit I carefully positioned to limit how many models could come into melee.

Well I assum he was leaning more towards say 4, 5 or 6 dudes on a base... but I agree with the problems.

A movement tray is in order, you will have to split them from their tray when entering some terrain, and of course melee.

Just make it the same size as the now defunct ordinance template.

Yeah.  I was looking at making sure that the bases are accurately sized.  So for example 4 gaunts on a 60mm base (as their bases would fit in this footprint if they were touching).  You may have a point for some rules but I could replace the base with actual individual models if needed in the same footprint to check for rules like that.

This is an interesting proposition, and, like unit fillers in old fantasy, could potentially open up some interesting modelling opportunities.

4x 25 mm bases have an area of 1963.75mm2

1x 50mm base has an area of...1963,75mm2

Practically, 4 gaunts on a 50mm base should work. I'd have no problems playing someone that did this. It's not exactly to the letter of the rules, but neither were unit fillers, and GW let people get away with them.

I guess people could get pedantic about coherency, but you can have your own models in b2b contact if you like anyway.

I might make one or two of these up anyway. Like giant ripper swarms!

Regimental rank bases actually came with the 2nd generation of regiment boxes. Basically long bases for a row of 4 models. I don't see how that was gw letting people away with it. They were selling it!

As for transferring the idea to 40k... I don't really like it... but some sort of movement tray for blobs could be handy but really not workable on dense terrain boards.

I would look into custom bases.

Larger bases with spots to put your models into. Then just base your dudes normally do you can still use them on tables where the terrain is so sense the larger base is impossible to use.

It's not exactly to the letter of the rules, but neither were unit fillers, and GW let people get away with them.

Actually, towards the end, GW encouraged you to use unit fillers (think it was either the last or prior to last edition).

For the question at hand - I would go with something similiar to the old War of the Ring movement trays :)

I don't remember GW encouraging them per se, but they featured in armies in WD and such. I think it worked for GW as people were replacing like 4 empire soldiers with an ogre and such. They absolutely did say no fillers that weren't models, such as gravestones in units like undead. I think that was in a tournament pack.

I think I remember seeing unit fillers actually drawn in the diagrams (in the BRB) explaining potential movements, charging, facing etc.
