I just want to talk about old games. Where to get them, opinions on them etc.

By retro I mean essentially anything pre Dawn of War. This may be arbitrary to some but I see DOW as a major shift in these games as dow was such a great game and everything after is compared to it, and not compared to anything prior.

This is brought on by reminiscing about a game I think was called rights of war. It was a hex, turn based game with IG, space marines, eldar, genestealer infested guard and tyranids. I never finished it as I only played it in my early teens at a friend's house.

Had a lot of fun when I was younger with Final Liberation, turn based game Imperials vs Orks based on Epic. Played a version of it again not to long ago from the internet, sadly without the memorable cutscenes. Was having fun until I realised the enemy side in the campaign was always balanced in points vs yours, so it didn't really matter how you allocated your resources between your armies, or even if you spent any at all.

And i liked Final Liberation which was Epic set on Armageddon.

Final Liberation! Exactly what I was going to suggest. I got my modern copy from GOG. Ah, Final Liberation... the home of the (in)famous Commissar Holt. ^_^

(Which, incidentally, has a spiritual successor in Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon. It's on steam.)

A while back I found a space hulk game, top down. Looked to be the entire old board game and all expansions made into a videogame. I Really enjoyed it a lot. I need to re-find it!

I'll have to look for chaos gate aswell. I had heard of it but never played it.

Did nobody else play rights of war?

I got Chaos Gate from Gog.com for a few bucks, retro second edition 40k.

And i liked Final Liberation which was Epic set on Armageddon.

Do you have this game working on a current operating system? I have tried several avenues and all of them failed.

I use a 7 year old laptop still running on Windows 7 so i have more problems with today games.

Even just reading the comments on gog.com I've seen more people not be able to play it than play it. I've failed consistently over the years and I even have the CD from when I was a kid.

Maybe I'll look into playing it through some sort of system emulator..

EDIT: Just found this video that looks promising, though maybe 88 for animation speed is a bit fast. I'll have to dig out my copy and see if I can get it to work one day.

Final Liberation was amazing for the time. I found it had a few stability problems, soft locking and such, but most games you could finish just fine. It seemed to be mainly caused by Titans / Gargants, which aren't very common in the campaign.

Chaos Gate was great, but hard. Really, really hard.

Oh yeah. Visually it was pretty great moving thru various battlefields, imperial installations and vessels. Game play was wonky, it had some weird glitches, never seamed to have been finished and certain things about the spacemarine just wasn't right...

Also being a firewarrior you probably should have been smeared across the floor very early on, especially in that first 1 on 1 dual against a space marine... who plodded along more like a dreadnaught than anything else which was the problem.

That and the entire functionality of the bolter was WAY off!

I was thinking about my old games yesterday after I found the Final Liberation soundtrack on youtube :biggrin.: then I died inside as that game will be 20 years old this November. Final Liberation, Chaos Gate, Rites of War and even Fire Warrior were great games to me at the time but holy hell the Bolter was awful! I can't remember if I completed RoW but I do remember spamming one of the psychic powers where you got a little animation of the targets heart exploding.

Most of them are on GOG and should work on modern PCs - think they came onto GOG earlier this year.

edit - just remembered I had the ancient Space Hulk game too but I could never get it to install at the time! The newer Space Hulk games aren't too bad though.

The new Space Hulk game is almost identical to the board game in terms of gameplay. I only say almost because I haven't actually played the board game since the 90's and can't remember everything.

Emperor be damned but I can't stop thinking about Chaos Gate now. I only beat the game once and it irks me I can't remember the plot resolution more specifically.
