Lord Morgrim
If you were starting Tau from the beginning what would be a good start? Say building first to 50 PL. I assume fire warriors are a good place to start? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/337895-best-start-for-tau/ Share on other sites
Panzer
That's an easy question. A Start Collecting box. Depending on the Crisis loadout that's already between 400 and 500 points (should be roughly 50PL, didn't check since I don't play with PL). Next up would be any of those three in any order: second Start Collecting Box, the Pathfinder+Devilfish Box or a Commander. This will give you a well rounded basis for a T'au army. Edit: Oh and pro-tip: for the sake of the gods, magnetize your Crisis! Xenith
From scratch, I'd probably go: 1) Start collecting Tau 2) riptide. 3) Start collecting Tau 4) Devilfish. It doesn't make sense to buy anything other than start collecting sets, when you need a minimum of 1 battlesuit and 1 pathfinder squad to make an army (these cost £75 together). Start collecting contains fire warriors, not pathfinders. Pathfinders are a fast attack choice for Tau now. As others have recommend pick up a start collecting box and go from there. A commander box is probably a safe bet as well because tau commanders are one of the best units in their index currently. It's crap right now. Maybe it'll change with the Codex but with the Index rules/cost it's not worth taking. Commander is the unit to spam in 8th now. And yes Pathfinder are not part of the Start Collecting box. That's why I recommended the Pathfinder+Devilfish box. Please don't give advice when you don't know what you're talking about. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/337895-best-start-for-tau/#findComment-4852294 Share on other sites
Lord Morgrim
Well i picked up some stuff off a guy for half price. This is what i have to start. 40 Firewarriors, 2 devilfish, 3 hammerheads, Longstrike and a commander box. What should i get next and how should i configure my commander? The Yncarne
With what you have now, it looks like a good start to a traditional mech Tau list circa 3-4th edition. If it were me, I'd go for crisis suits next. That will give you some variety in firepower and range options. A Fire Cadre HQ could also buff your fire warriors depending on how you play. The_Chaplain
how should i configure my commander? Honestly, you should magnetize him if you have the opportunity to do so. That way you can try out the different bits and bobs of equipment and see what fits your personal play style best. Definitely magnetize your commander so you can switch his equipment whenever you feel like. Quad Fusion Blaster Commander are rather popular atm tho. Next purchase should be Pathfinder I'd say. The Markerlight table isn't as great as it used to be but the ability to re-roll 1s is invaluable and since you have so many Devilfish, Hammerheads and Longstrike the ability to shoot Seeker Missiles at users BS (with re-rolling 1s) is pretty useful as well. After that you have a good core. Crisis Suits would be a viable option to purchase after that but it's entirely up to you whether you want an infantry list, a tank list, a battlesuit list or a mix of those things.
