Praetor of Calth
Voted for the "Emperors Gift" purely due to the sheer stupidity that it got made OOP anyway. It only came out a handful of years ago.... Great book, that belongs on the shelves. Carach
Voted emps gift as i never got to read that Unfamiliar with the 'world that was' so voted at random - that kind of made me think though why haven't i ever read the traditional warhammer stuff? I've always liked the setting much as i liked wh40k but never read any material So can someone give me some recommendations on a level with eisenhorn of 40k etc Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338166-black-library-big-brother/page/2/#findComment-4858935 Share on other sites

Felix Antipodes
I was really torn on what to vote for since I have all of them already. Went with Space Marine, even though I already have two editions of it already(!), as I feel it is only right that one of the oldest books should get the 20 year celebration treatment. I hope that whichever ones win they get the full HB treatment. Imagine Space Marine as a full audio drama! Servant of Dante
Ah, Space Marine . . . I'm not sure which I enjoyed more, the novel or this review http://ferretbrain.com/articles/article-288 That review is pretty great :D makes me all the more interested in all the weird quirkiness that went on in early 40K fiction. Cleanse And Purify
Honestly I think he oversells the gay bondage stuff (though it's definitely there) but it's a fair review. The novel is very weird by modern 40k standards and also very, very 80s. I stand by it :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338166-black-library-big-brother/page/2/#findComment-4859348 Share on other sites

veterannoob
I have every Fantasy novel so I just picked what I think others should read. Emp's Gift or Lord of Night. And Riders of the Dead or Zavant. Yes, I have two (at least) personalities... Cleanse And Purify
Riders of the Dead is also really good. Has action, but a lot is about how the Chaos tribes work and what it's like to get captured by one. Can't give away more than that, but read it. It's vintage Abnett and one of the better WHFB books Sandlemad 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338166-black-library-big-brother/page/2/#findComment-4859583 Share on other sites
HeritorA
Without any disrespect to Bowden (whose Emperors gift is the less 'good' book he ever written) and Abnett (whose Brothers of the Snake is his worst novel) - 'Lord of the night' totally deserve a reprint. And for the WFB we need Zavant. Again Rennie wrote a truly brilliant novel (through with style, structure and prose issues). It is one of the best, through definitely old by now. Here at least we have a contender in my opinion - cause 'Riders of the dead' is also a brilliant novel. OnboardG1
Yeah I want Lord of the Night back. At least partly so I'm reminded to return the copy a friend lent me five years ago and I forget to give back to him every time I see him. grailkeeper
It's a long time since I read Lord of Night, and I wasn't as much of a 40k Fanboy then as I am now, but I remember it being not very good. I liked Si Spurriers Crossed series which is the only other work of his I've read. Cleanse And Purify
Perhaps a discussion for a different thread, lest someone ask you why you dislike Brothers of the Snake or The Emperors Gift, and the thread progresses predictably from there R_F_D 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338166-black-library-big-brother/page/2/#findComment-4860577 Share on other sites

Maybe not as good as Eisenhorn but as good as the better Gaunt's Ghosts books. It's one of the best low-key depictions of chaos anywhere. Problem with Zavant not a lot of fans read it.
