I don't know about you fellows, but my Templars don't feel... Zealous enough without one of our special characters at the helm. Most often I look to run 2, and sometimes all 3!

That said, we get a Space Marine relic for free, which is great! But they can't go on any named characters... So what are you choosing, on who, and why?

And as a secondary, follow up, who are you choosing as your warlord? I almost feel like its the emperor's champion receives the most benefit from our own warlord trait, but perhaps there are some other combinations or thoughts?

Uphold the Honour of the Emperor

I always take Helbrecht as my warlord, am looking at a list down the road with Grim, and tend to slap the Templar relic on a Lieutenant for an easy boost, and once on a Marshal on a bike to make a very mobile 9" bubble.

Correct me if I'm missing anything but is the EC really 75pts? Im making a list on quartermaster app and it seemed the EC is a really cheap named character

its because he have no buff-abilities.

(think about that the only thing why Eldar players in last editions take a which, just because of the buffs... so 75 points is not very cheap, I would say its okay).

Yeah EC is just 75pts. But he is only good against minor characters/MEQ/TEQ. He struggles against big baddies like Demon Princes/Hive Tyrants/Swarm Lords/Warbosses.

I take him to kill all,... but not allone, he have to be in a bubble with Helbrecht and Grimaldus - so he maybe get a few additional attacks and Str. 8. And if it doesnt work alone, we can take 2 CP and hit again when he dies.

75 points (to kill Characters from 100 - 250 points) its worth

Helbrecht is my go-to HQ, and next to him I usually run a Chaplain with jumppack to accomodate my Vanguard, Reivers and Terminators that deepstrike, so that one usually gets the relics and such. Depending on if I use my allied patrol detachement, Saint Celestine is in there too...

I was looking at the Relic-Banner and thinking about dropping it on a company ancient to roll in with black tide or whoever else might want it.

Morale immunity, -1 enemy ld, and grabbing an extra dying attack on a 3+ isn't too shabby.

On a purely mathematical point of view, the relic is best used on a chaplain, because he has 2 auras that benefit from it (leadership bubble and re-roll bubble). Beyond that, it's case by case depending on your army list.

As for myself, I actually do not actively run our named HQs, because not every crusade has to be THE crusade. To that effect, I'm like the fact that the cenobyte servitors do not specifically require Grimaldus to be taken, so I'll model my own set with relics of my crusade.

I must be the odd one out. I don't run any special characters, relics, or warlord traits.

Last week I used a lieutenant for the first time. He did ok, but not sure he's worth the points for every game.

Normally I only run a jump Chaplain w/ EC. They get me through well enough. Games that I lose wouldn't change much if I did have any of the above.

why dont take just one relic - its totally for free,... no CP and no points. And the worlord traits too.

Yeah, there's literally no reason not to take 1 relic.  It's a free buff, some of them being really damn good.  The Templar relic is quite nice itself.  Expanding that Chaplain's aura to 9" isn't small potatoes.

Warlord traits are very important as well.

Running a "vanilla" Chaplain (or Primaris, whatever floats your boat) with the helmet and giving him the "autopass morale within 6"" warlord traid sounds like an alternative to Grimaldus in Black Tides, no? 9" leadership bubble and reroll bubble and then a 6" "immune to morale" bubble to support blobs?

I swear by taking the Banner relic and giving it to my Primaris Ancient.

Plop him down next to 2 squads of hellblasters and no one wants to risk shooting at them. Its awesome.

My Warlord is currently the Emperors champ because he is the only BT character I have at the moment, although I do plan on converting a primaris scale Helbrecht and Grimaldus before too long. hat does mean I dont take the BT Warlord trait though as he doesn't have any aura effects. :/

To be honest, in that case I'd much rather take another trait and get cenybyte servitors as they have a 12" bubble.

Cenobytes may not be as survivable, but you only need them to save you from 2 or 3 rounds of battle, and I suspect that most enemies will be trying to shoot the marines, not the small number of servitors. Furthermore, this frees up points for more characters and bodies. Personally, I feel the cenobytes are far more useful now than ever before.

Edit: I am having trouble deciding on characters, I feel I want Helbrecht or a captain at the very least for rerolls to hit, A Castellan/Lieutenant for rerolls of 1 to wound, the EC for character slaying, and Cenobytes for morale, though I have been playing black tide, which runs much better with characters.

  • 2 weeks later...

EC at 108 pts was cheap, now at 75 he is pretty much auto-include.

You need to get him to mostly back line HQs first...my EC hasn't killed anyone in 8th, but I still run 3 HQs being Helbrecht, Chaplain and Techmarine for repairs to the LRC until I get a second one then I might field the EC again as it will be unlikely to need a vital repair over 2 LRC.

Relic goes to either Chaplain (buffed Bolter) or Techmarine (+3" aura)
