Ascanius
While I don't have the time to go into my ebooks and try to track down the places where it happens, the corollary to "swayed aside" is a thing that I've noticed from time to time in the series where a sentence will be awkwardly phrased to use a noun or adjective twice in too close proximity. The Deathfire/fiery thing there is sort of close to what I mean, but more like "He was frightened by the frightening tone she used." It is very rare, but it's one of those things that sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Ascanius
Nah. The "Vulkan lives!" thing in Deathfire was actually very interesting because I liked the look at the way religious fervour spread amongst the Astartes of the Pyre - or didn't, in some cases, but people went along with Numeon's plans anyway for various reasons. I just don't have a problem with any of the things people criticise Kyme's work for, I guess. I've enjoyed the storyline. Zuvassin
I like Kyme and Deathfire, so I'm excited, but I think an issue with the HH overall is that the legions are often depicted one-dimensionally - the Sallies are generally do-gooders, the World Eaters are almost always mindless. ADB's depiction of Lheorvine in his Black Legion series, or even his depiction of Khârn and Argel Tal in Betrayer - where they are still connected to their legion's faults but aren't completely enslaved to them - is something I wish was done more often in the HH series. Early on, there used to be tension between the Terra-born and native-born Astartes in a legion, and then as the series rolled towards Istvaan you had the tension between those seemingly in their traitor primarch's favor and those that seemed destined to be betrayed, but since then it does feel that most of the legions have been left to their most basic or clichéd reputations. Which makes me wonder if that's why people dislike Kyme's Sallies to a degree - it's a bit easier to be generic if the cliché is frothing murderer or degenerate worshipper or embittered and cruel soldier. I thought Kyme actually did a great job in Deathfire in the tension between Numeon's single-minded obsession and those who didn't believe, or who believed but thought he was risking too much regardless. Zuvassinthe World Eaters are almost always mindless. - have you read 'Betrayer' by A D-B? Not even close. Sallies from Kyme - are one dimensional and Mary Sue from the top to bottom. 3) Cause storyline is plainly boring and sometimes plainly 'fantastic' beyond belief even for the grimdark of W30-40K? Ascanius
I don't agree Kyme's novels are "bolter-pornish", or at least they're not the worst offenders. But the thing is, for those readers who only care about books which "progress the storyline" through the big battles to Terra, of course they're not interesting. But I like the Imperium Secundus storyline, I prefer books that delve into the personalities of Legionaries and the character of a Legion, and while Kyme is never going to dethrone Abnett as a stylist, French for twisty narratives, or AD-B for evocation of the setting, I think he's fine. We all have our humble opinions. For me the problem with Kyme is that he have a very blank, boring style and prose. And he was given one of the least interesting sidelines of the HH (that's why they added Shattered Legions and Meduson vs Marr duel culmination into it - cause there is nothing to tell about Sallies line) . It's good that it will end at last Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338223-hh-book-47-old-earth/page/5/#findComment-4889097 Share on other sites
Taliesin
Dramatis Persona posted by Black Librarium. Novel goes up for pre-order next week. Cast of characters looks impressive. Someone help me out and tell me what on Earth a "Shade Stalker of the Shadowed Path" might be? https://twitter.com/blacklibrarium/status/931573907789959169 Edit: Apparently a Mandrake champion, nicknamed The Decapitator. Nice. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/338223-hh-book-47-old-earth/page/5/#findComment-4934999 Share on other sites
Marshal Loss
Hmm. If this is where Tybalt Marr's/Shadrak Meduson's story ends, I hope it gets handled well. Mellow
So the Cabal will have representation? Interesting. Perhaps they will be informing Vulkan of his destiny to appear in other Novels and that he shouldn’t worry too much about this whole HH thing. Taliesin
Hmm. If this is where Tybalt Marr's/Shadrak Meduson's story ends, I hope it gets handled well. Apparently that is resolved here, as per earlier comments. Novel seems to have quite a few balls up in the air going by that dramatis personae, and of course it is interesting that this is unexplored territory for us, we don't really know what is going to happen here. Izlude
This potentially has the makings of a strong book: 1. Meduson and Marr rivalry: My personal favorite 2 Narak-I actually like Narak alot and of course his big sniper rifle 3. The perpetual stuff 4. Finale for Vulkan? I forget if they play a large role in the seige I have enjoyed his shorts and liked Vulkan lives. The only book I was not a fan of was Deathfire (cool cover aside) was little painful to read (Really was the “Vulken lives!” Ad naseum and the assualting of a homeworld with A ship...
