Hi guys

So us boys over here in the Aett don't have any apothecaries walking about. We have Wolf Priests instead. However, no Wolf Priest I have seen is carrying a narthecium and we don't have access to one in our rules. So who harvests the Geneseed of fallen space wolves? Do the Wolf Priests do a 'manual' job mid fight or do they go around after the battle has finished with proper machines?

It's the Reductor, not the Narthecium that is used for harvesting the Progenoid Glands (if I'm recalling correctly), and our Wolf Priests call it the "Fang of Morkai". At some point, editions ago, it had an in-game effect, but now it's just a fluff item.

Yup, the Fangs of Morkai has been used in fluff for Wolf Priests to harvest gene seed from fallen battle brothers. Whether it actually resembles a narthecium carried around by regular apothecaries is up to debate.

In game, Wolf Priests have been a combination of Chaplain and Apothecary, with the unfortunate effect of excelling at neither job compared to Chaplains and Apothecaries.

1) 6/7th Edition - Instead of providing 5+ Feel No Pain, Wolf Priest provided an atrociously worse 6+ Feel No Pain. I don't know about you, but I've never had my Wolf Priest save anyone with his Fangs of Morkai before. compared  to chaplain, Wolf Priest provided Preferred Enemy instead of hatred, which depending on your point of view, is either better or worse.

2) 8th Edition - Although Wolf Priest can heal as good as Apothecaries, what they can't do is resurrect fallen battle brothers, which is kinda sad. However, compared to regular chaplains, I think there's nearly no difference with the exception of wargear.

All things considered, Wolf Priests are probably more useful than Apothecaries who can't fight well or have good wargear. I'm actually thinking of getting the Primaris Chaplain and Primaris Apothecary to see if I can combine them to be a Wolf Priest with SOME healing aeshtethic.

Well, having the WP granting rerolls of all misses in melee is pretty solid, and they aren't exactly poorly equipped to begin with. I do miss the option of giving them 2+ runic armor, but throwing a WP behind some wulfen with TH/SS or a full unit of BCs makes a real difference.

Am not sure if this is still the case, but at some time in the fluff all marines had a "field" version of the reductor, which was able to extract the gene seed from a dead dude, but could hold it undamaged for a short time, plus as the extraction was done  by a non apothecary trained marine, it did not always work. I think SW used it in the belly of the beast story, and in the first ragnar book.

Never said Wolf Priest aren't good, it's just that in the Apothecary role, they miss out on the whole potential ressurrection of your melta or power fist dude.
