Hi all

I'm interested in converting an Alpha Legion themed daemon prince and was wondering how you would go about doing that.

Obviously something like the guy below would be ideal, what with the hydra motif and all.

The problem is that GWs Hydra kit doesn't look like it would mesh well with the DP's body. I doubt I'd be able to fit even two or more heads through his neck plate and would probably need a lot of greenstuff to make it work.

Alternatively I could just go for a non-hydra reptilian look, maybe using something like a cold one or a lizardman/stormcast monster.

Thoughts or ideas for kits?

How about giving the Daemon Prince a half-Face-plate hiding/obscuring half his face, to play on the whole Janus/Facechanging/Double-Crossing nature of the AL.

I don't know how big the Hydra Heads are compared to the DP, butt maybe you could use the heads without the lower Jaws.

One on each Shoulder as decorative pauldrons - you could then either paint them metallic or natural as if it was a real slain creature.

And one on his head, as a cowl, to obscure his face. You could even add a greenstuff (or plasticard) cloak to it and sculpt some scales onto it. That's fairly easy to do.

I'd recommend maybe looking into using Archaon's mount as the base model for the Hydra Daemon Prince's body. Seems like that would be a solid start and has plenty of space for the many Hydra heads (it has space for three large ones already) Not to mention the pose is, while not exact 1 for 1, pretty close to the art.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea.

There's more to AL than Hydras. Plus I don't have to sell my kidney buying other kits too.

Maybe one of the generic prince faces, but greenstuff covering the facial features to play up the whole "Faceless" aspect.

Maybe, as you said, a half mask of some kind. What about a Dark Eldar grotesque head? That's about the right size I think and suitably faceless.

That thing is huge... far bigger than a daemon prince. Even just using the torso would make it massive.

I like the provided illustration, OP... if you take the plastic daemon kit and hollow out the neck, you could simply stick in the heads from a hyrda mini. A relatively close match might be the D&D heroslayer hydra:

Regrettably that thing is very hard to find, but you get the idea. You could certainly use other hydra minis, like D&D fen hydra or the reaper bones model. Chop off the necks and heads, paint it green and hail hydra.

I might do just that, thanks for the suggestion.

I was considering using third party models (as my local group doesn't play in GW anyway) but if I did want to play in a GW store, what's their stance on official models again? Something like 75% of the model must be from a GW product?

I found this dude after five minutes of searching:

I like the heads and they look like they'd be about the same size seeing as they are coming out of a torso piece already. A friend of mine is big into converting, so I could probably get him to help.

Depends upon the store manager - it's generally a 'know it when I see it' approach. But generally if it's got 50% plus of recognizable GW bits in it, and 'looks' GW style, they won't object, and may even approve! They're mainly looking out for things like blocks of cheaper reaper/mantic minis, main characters that are completely 3rd party, resin recasts of GW metal or plastic minis, that sort of thing that are clearly not purchased from GW. You can do complete scratchbuilds, but it has to 'look' GW scale. Saying a 3rd part model is scratchbuilt, when it's clearly a plastic/resin cast with super good professional detail will raise an eyebrow, particularly if in comparison to the rest of the army. GW managers read the internet too, and are quite used to seeing what the competitors minis look like.

But they recognise it's a hobby too, and 3rd party arms/heads/weapons are a fact of life to make cool conversions. They want your army to showcase the GW way of life to people watching/passing by, so the more the rest of your army is vanilla GW, the more they may let you get away with as long as it's not obvious.

So using those hydra heads on a DP kit (or other GW bits) would almost certainly be fine unless a manager was particularly anal, in which case you probably don't want to play there anyway.

Using the whole thing probably would get flagged at some point, even if you say swapped the weapons with GW bits.

Edit: I should add, the type of player you are makes a difference too; a regular with a decently painted mostly-GW army who is a good sportsman, buys stuff in-store sometimes, is nice to the newbies, and doesn't talk openly about where parts come from etc will usually be given a lot more slack than the mouthy 12 year old that comes in with an army of only-primed mantic undead and brags to his mates about how cheap they were.
