Building tournament lists, I've been struggling to determine how much I want to invest in backfield support vs dominions and after overloading on dominions at the last event I went to I've settled on about 500pts. Looking at what I have available to me here are the options:

Knight Crusader(painted our martyred lady) with avenger gatling and RFBC 540pts OR

2Exorcists, Canoness(Variable equipment), 2 Squads of Heavy bolter rets(or 1 squad with an imagifier). 500-561pts.

Mathing it out favors the exorcists a bit, more wounds, more targets, equivalent damage output (in shooting).

But there are a lot of intangibles that favor the knight, like having a big scary monster that draws attention from the dominions, it's actually ridiculous melee output with stompy feet, biing impossible to tie up, etc.

IDK, what do ya'll think?

What rules are they using for 1st turn?

Currently in the tournament scene 1st turn wins the vast majority of the time and thus minimising your number of placement drops is a big thing.

So, if they are using the core rulebook rules (1st to finish deploying goes 1st) then you probably want the Knight. Otherwise, I personally prefer the 2nd option (though with 2 Ret squads - never take an Imagifier for HB Rets!)

We've all seen the Chapter Approved preview - but technically that rule is not in force yet - so it's definitely worth checking with the event organisers what rule they're using.

NOTE - as well as the 1st turn being very important, the person who goes 1st also rolls the dice to see if the game ends. As written, they can use a CP to re-roll this dice.

The +1 roll, it still ends up being largely irrelevant as even with a knight the only army I usually have less drops than is Guard.

I think a lot of it depends on your play style. Yeah you can take 50 meat bags to do some bubble wrapping...but that's so boring. Ugh.

(confession: prior to 8th ruining Space Wolves, my weapon of choice was about 21 Thunderwolves. I'm not what you'd call a "castle up and hang out" kinda player, usually)

The knight brings something to the table that Sisters severely lack: effective long-ranged shooting. And if someone gets really spicy and decides to pay attention to your knight while your girls fire up the bar-b-que...well, that's their loss (usually literally).

EDIT: Oh man, I somehow read that as "conscripts", not "Exorcists". Wow.

Exorcists are baller, they really are, and they're slightly tougher than most opponents realize...but I'd still go with the knight. Excellent crowd control with the gatling and heavy flamer, and it can at least put wounds on tanks until your melta doms get there (you are taking melta doms in repressors, right?)
