I think I have been confused about SftS.

You can use a stratagem once during each phase.

Strike from the Shadows lets you bring a unit in at the beginning of a turn.

Therefore, you can bring one unit in each turn.

Additionally

Characters count as their own unit, so you can't bring in a character and a unit together.

This is far less cool than I'd thought. I'd wanted to use it to infiltrate a lot of different units turn one and that simply is not possible this way.

Kind of like how Born to the Saddle lets you rocket one unit into combat on turn one. One unit - alone and unsupported.

If I am reading this correctly, how are the rest of you planning to use SftS?

If I'm interpreting it correctly, SftS lets you bring in units AFTER deployment but BEFORE the first turn.

Since deployment is not actually a phase like move, psychic, assault, the limitation of one per turn does not apply.

It represents the Raven Guard penchant for ambush tactics and careful planning.

You use the stratagem during deployment per the wording on page 197. The BRB also clarifies on page 215 that the limit to using Stratagems once per phase does not apply to those that are not used during a phase. Deployment isn't a phase.

To clarify for the OP, you can ONLY use the stratagem during deployment and at no other time. You can't use it before every turn - you use it during deployment and the unit emerges before the first player turn.

On a related note, how are people dealing with the timing of the Stratagem as it interacts with alternating deployment and taking first turn?

You have to declare during deployment which units are arriving via things like jump packs, teleport, etc.

Do you declare SftS in the same manner, and only place them at the defined time, or so you somehow keep them secret?

Yes, you must declare SftS in the same manner. In the strictest technical terms, you are deploying a unit with SftS during deployment, and merely placing them on the table after everyone has deployed. The wording is very similar to Jet Pack units, "you may deploy them to the teleportarium" or what not. You must declare that this is where they are being deployed.
