Because they are green, obviously.:teehee:

No, really. That's the whole reason why I originally decided on playing them. I like green. It was a toss-up between Orks, Salamanders and DA.

Orks were silly and I like dark green better.

Of course, over time, I learned to appreciate the ambiguous nature of their loyalty. Plus, I like fielding my all terminator army.

Having three distinct color schemes also helps prevent painting burnout. Too much green lately? Paint something black. Too much black? Go back to green, or do some bone.

Their style is quintessentially Grim Dark 40k. They more than any other really push the "Warrior Monks in space" theme of marines more than any other and they are still generic enough that you don't need all the extra flourish for them to shine.

They have good lore and quality sculpts with a huge variety between the Raven/ Deathwing.

I mean, the 3rd Ed Dex is still THE image that sold space marines to me as a nipper... Just look!

For me that is the perfect 40k artwork. But that could be the Nostalgia talking...

While I did eventually settle on Blood Angel's as my chapter of choice, I'll always love the both of em.

The name is pretty :censored:  metal too!

The only ambiguity in their loyalty was in the minds of fans after reading that ill-fated book by Gav Thorpe.

DA were always the good guys that have to be the Imperium bad cops... Because it's a dirty job but someone has to do it.

As for the question, why DA?

Because they gave me the honor of choosing me to play them. And I am thankful for that.

Only clarifying for myself here: ambiguity as in the fact that part of the legion went rogue. I also like the stories about the members of the traitor legions that stayed loyal during the heresy, like that warsmith, or Cruze. It rings far more true than "The whole legion # went over to the enemy" or "The whole legion # stayed loyal". Internal schisms are more interesting from a storytelling point of view. Conflict breeds better stories than mindless heroism.

I started playing during Rogue Trader and liked the DAs black paint. When the DAs were given their background, I thought the uncertainty about their loyalty and the Hunt for tne Fallen and the Fallen themselves makes for an interesting story. It all makes my dark side all warm and fuzzy. The loyal part of me is happy, but the chaos part of me likes to giggle like a Nurgling.

I love the ambiguity as well, their backstory is great, and the additional lore as the first legion, being the first to test new goodies, makes it a neat differentiating part to codex compliant marines.

I also feel like their different paint schemes make for a nice change in scenery, which most certainly piqued my interest as well. That, and the Dark Vengeance box that got me back into the hobby :)

When I discovered Wh40k with the second edition I instantly loved the art: huge battlefields with colorful Space marines !

The ones that I fell for were the Blood Angels on the 2nd edition boxed set and the Dark Angels on the Dark millenium expansion box.

Deathwing is really cool, especially the "plain worlds" tradition.

Actually, I just decided that I'll keep my Dark vengeance models as they are and not convert them into BA.

I'm gonna add 1000pts of DA as allies for my BA :)

- Caliban Green is one of the best colours that exists.

- The Deathwing.

- The Ravenwing.

- The Hunt.

- Interrogator Chaplains.

- The Deathwing

- The model for Sammael.

- The challenge of making three colour schemes in the same army look cohesive, and THAT MOMENT when it does.

Did I mention the Deathwing?

I have a very similar story to Tonius. I started with Blood Angels as I love the color red. I had a small Blood Angel army before i stopped playing as a kid. So when I got back into 40k there was something that drew me to the Dark Angels after seeing one in the Space Marine Codex. Now after 12k+ of them I love their story. I love they they are stubborn, they are all about themselves, and i love that they are still good but their is mystery around them. Kind of the like the Punisher, still a good guy but go a different way about it. I am very stubborn in real life and only like being around people I know so its a perfect fit for me.

Should I play a chapter corresponding to my real personnality, I would be probably more of a Space Wolf than a Blood Angel ! ;)

All laughing' beer drinking :P

In that case I should be an Ork cuz I cobble everything together and it looks like :cuss but somehow the job's a good'un.

Gothic-monk-knight feel. The cover of 3rd ed dex bought my loyalty the instant I saw it.

Their codex fluff is unique, the only legion split in the middle, paying price to this day (which was their own choice). As for the ambiguity, well. There's none. They are just one of MANY dick imperial factions (inquisition, other chapters, ecclesiarchy...) that have their own agendas and anything standing in their way will not be standing there for long. They were always loyal to the Imperium.

Also despite being badtouched by some BL writers too many times they're still fluffawesome.

Blood Angels are my calling. They are passionate, outgoing, and in-your-face. It doesn't matter how big your wall or shield is, they will charge through and stab your eyeballs out.

Dark Angels, in contrast, are taciturn, aloof, and will fight you at the time and place of their choosing. They care not what you do for they will calmly stand their ground and lay down disciplined fire if you charge, or stab you if hang back, or just rift cannon your :cuss if you hide behind a wall.

As others have said, they are the 1st Legion.

I first (pun not intended) playing 40k in the early 90's and I fell in love with the DA Captain model with his sword facing down that I saw a pic of when thumbing through a copy of White Dwarf in WHSmith on a Saturday. So I painted all the Marines from the 2nd Edition box as Dark Angels and, with a few weeks of pocket money and paper round money, bought a box of Deathwing Terminators for the princely sum of around £15.

Dark Angels still, IMHO, have the most beautiful range of models/kits of any army in 40K and Fantasy (RIP) to this date.

Except for Belial. Lord only knows what they were thinking....

Like a lot of 40K enthuthiasts, I got conned by the Angels of Darkness novel into thinking Dark Angels are backstabbing imperial closet traitors. Only in the last 5 years or so when the DA masters like Samael, Azrael and the Cypher were fleshed out did I come to respect and sort of understand the DA motivations for backstabbing.

Not that it's acceptable, but I think it adds a layer of comprehension that makes me respect the secretive chapter to the point I would say if I weren't a Space wolf, I would play Dark Angels.

It's complicated, which is not helped by Gav thorpe making everything complicated, but my opinion of the Dark Angels now is that of a chapter who are unable to put behind the past and therefore in their minds, HAVE to be secretive in order to protect themselves and even those under their protection.

Damn, it's complicated but its like your grandchild knows that his grandfather did something really bad but he doesn't know exactly what, and that he would bear the consequenecs of his grandfather if it were known to everyone. Problem is, he still doesn't know WHAT his grandfather did or didn't do, so he is forever forced to live in a mixture of doubt, shame and pride while figuring out what exactly happened 10K years ago.

The most awesome thing that happened recently though, is that Azrael fought Khârn and managed to not only survive, but earn the respect of the betrayer (for what its worth). How it happened I leave it to you to read but suffice to say it was awesome.

Why i like the First Legion?

Because they are the pefect rappresentation of the grimdark style of WH40K

They are gothic and dark, noble but desperate, holding on their own shoulders a guilty they did non made

I dont like however the last novels written by Thorpe, i think they are not good to show what the DA truly are and just generated plot holes and the tired joke of "DA are traitors, Fallen are good"

Don't want to do further bashing, but yeah, that guy can't make up his mind, or maybe he did make up his mind to muck up any good thing about the Dark Angels and Fallen.
