As most of you (if not all by now) know the 40k rpg has been taken by another company. I was thinking of a "farewell" campaign of DeathWatch but with a twist. Plot will basically be that the players are part of a prophecy (I know, cliche) without knowing it. Somehow they end up in 50k, the Imperium broken etc (will use the 50k:a shape of nightmares to come as basic lore in that setting). Thing is I wonder how they will return to "fulfill the prophecy" and basically go back to their own time.

Would you consider the whole idea as good or not? I am afraid of the compromises they would have to do (or not) and how it should affect them. Plus I still don't have a clue how to get them back in their own time.

So..what do you guys think?

P.S. Not sure if this is the correct section to post this, if not I apologize.

40k is full of stuff that could explain time traveling so you should be pretty safe regardless of what you come up with. The is even a precedent of an Ork warlord that travels back in time to kill himself so he can have two of his favourite weapon.

Ancient technology is one option, so the likes of the Ancients, Eldar or Necrons might be a solid starting point. You also have the Webway that isn't fully understood by everyone so you could have a situation where they go chasing after some Aeldari only to take a wrong turn and end up forcing their way through a sealed exit portal. Once on the other side you could have them need to acquire some eldar rune tablets that basically have the instructions on how to reopen it or have them need to capture a Farseer or someone to open it.

Eldar are a good option for prophesies mainly because of their searching all possible strands of possible futures to save their race. The twist could be the marines fulfil the prophesy the Eldar set in place for them 10k ago.

What you have to remember is that your venture into the future could end up as one possible future, nothing has to be set in stone which gives you a lot of freedom. The Imperium may have crumbled or the Emperor may have risen and the Imperium of mankind rules the galaxy. It's basically a sandbox which I doubt GW would ever venture into officially anytime soon.

I'd write down the most likely outcome of what you want them to achieve in the future then vaguely mystify it so you can't nail exact events in place. You could say the ghosts of the past will topple the nature of evil rather than time travelling marines from the past travel to the future and slay a tyrant.

Try not to worry so much about future 40k lore and create something fun and engaging for your group instead.

There are stories in the lore of ships entering the warp and exiting at a vastly different time, most of these are relatively minor, IE to the crew the voyage was a month but in realspace it was 40 days or 20 days. However these occasionally are much greater.

I am familiar with the Ork Warboss that went back in time (by mistake) and killed his past self to have the same weapon twice or something, and it kind of gave me the idea, combined with 50k fan fics I have read. What happened and the Imperium was destroyed (the Imperium, not Mankind) will be based on that fanfics (shape of nightmares to come). In some cases loosely based but I have a few key events in mind. If we manage to pull it of (free time is a rare commodity the older I get) I will post updates for those interested :)

Normally I would say "Imperium isn't going to make it to 50k," but you mentioned Shape of Nightmares to Come which is the best 50k fanfic I have read, nothing else even comes close.

So yeah if it closesly follows that, awesome. It wouldn't be too hard to even fit Primaris/Ynnari stuff into that setting, though Orks and Nids (which both left the galaxy) might be trickier.

Shape of Nightmares to come is a bit too nihilistic for me. I didn't enjoy it at all.

I think people make the mistake of taking the setting too seriously and viewing it as overly grim(or wanting it to be so), when in fact Alien soccer hooligans with Green skin are flying around looking for a good scrap and Demi-Gods made manifest bestride the stars.

50k could be an interesting setting. Either humanity would be extinct or it would have ascended to a new glorious age as a psychic race.

Mankind evolving to psykers and turning all materium into warp space. Chaos triumphant.

While you are both right (in a way)I am kind of a nihilist as a person (or realist as I used to say to my ex or pessimist as she used to say). In a way players will have to make war against a possible (and truly dark) future and set in motion events that will change it (wibbly wobbly timey whimey...stuff!).

The idea of manking evolving to a psyker race is interesting and I will make it part of the setting (thank you :D ), I only hope that no one from the group will play a Black Templar. If there is one things could get... complicated.
