Hi all.

Do you guys know if there is any quirk or sonething noticeable from ultras successors?

So far all i've heard is that tgey are kind of like a blank canvas (or that they lack personality, if you ask people that hate the ultras).

So i went to the people that might know best.

I will gladly appreciate any help you could give me since i'm trying to flesh out a chapter of my own, but im still undecided if i make my chapter sons of guilliman or sons of vulkan.

Thanks

My friend did one of the new Ultramarine successors for his primaris army. The Fulminators. It's a pretty similar colour scheme to the original Ultramarines. His motivation was because he didn't want to be seen playing Ultramarines.

In my opinion, I think they look cool. I like their story, in particular how they endured the storms on Mars. Just go with what you think sounds cool. At the end of the day, if you enjoy the hobby then you'll be really happy regardless of what Chapter you choose or create.

The hatred for Ultras mainly comes from them being the poster boys and the dreaded 5ed Ward Dex. If you read deeper into it, there is a wealth of topics that can be touched upon. Dark Imperium also shines a new light on Guilliman. I would let 4chan memes get in the way of your enjoyment. Trust me when I say that most people do not dislike UM because they are bad or something. Most just follow the trend laid out by 4chan back in the days.

Personally I think Ultramarines have loads of character.

They have the Roman vibe but more than that, they are professional soldiers.

...not maniacs, not vampires, not emo Goths, not werewolves....

They defend the Imperium with a calm, professional, manner without relying on a gimmick.

....the fact that idiots hate them just adds to the appeal. It's why I started playing them all those years ago. I find it incredibly amusing that people hate toys based on their colour, fluff, etc.

...I mean, who wants to go with the crowd?

However, if I had to choose a successor, I'd go with the Silver Skulls. Easy colour scheme, neat fluff.

I dislike them because of Rowboat Girlyman and their currently really powerful, really effective traits, tactics, and stratagem compared to some of the other codex chapters. Anybody who says they're bland doesn't seem to know what they're talking about. The Roman theme is really cool and their history is way deeper than most any other chapter (being the poster boys). I'm not a huge fan of the colour scheme, personally, and that to me is truly the only reason one might prefer a successor. For me, that'd be one of the more ridiculous colour schemes (like Howling Griffons).

wow guys, thanks for all of those answers!

i´ve been looking at them because i am creating a chapter and, since ultras successors are the most numerous, it seemed like a nice idea to do so.

Then the ultras have this greco-roman theme mixed with professional soldier thing? that is kinda appealing for me (being a huge mythology-history fan) so i guess i might go with them.

now, the thing is how to call them :/

since many of the minis i am working with are old pewter grey knights all of the terminators and most of the power armour guys (i want to use them as sternguard) have the book and sword symbol, i might go for that as a chapter symbol. or maybe only the book.

as for colors i´m still deciding if ice blue with white shoulders or forest green with white shoulders. any ideas?

Also, the general idea of the chapter´s fluff is that they are guardians of knowledge or maybe a huge library planet, but they aren´t that big in psykers since i only want to use 2 at most. I see them more as scholar-warriors like the templars of old.

any suggestions?

maybe something you guys could share in order to build a better story for my chapter?

thanks

I really have to second the idea of a group of professional soldiers. I really liked that feel of them from some of the BL books I have read and wanted to portray that on the field. However, I also really liked the knightly themes of the Dark Angels, so I decided to mix the two and made a chapter of blind monks.

The beauty of the Ultramarines is that they can truly be used as the foundation of just about anything you can imagine. With so much gene-seed out there, you can do just about anything and it would still be cannon. If anything all you have to do is look at the major differences between the silver skulls and the ultramarines. They are night and day, and yet they still agree they come from the same gene-sire.

So I say, do what you will and have fun with it. And haters are always gonna hate.

Personally, I am not the biggest fan of the historical Romans. However, I am a fan of the Ultramarines because they are righteous, reasonable, educated beyond mere warfare but are capable of using their gift in civic manner, they are disciplined, but still have plenty of humanity instead of giving into cold efficency as seen in their role of defenders of Ultramar. Not so much that they are professional soldiers. In the end, all Astartes are to some degree and with different levels of expertise. Dark Angels and Fists are no less capable. It is their involvement and activities outside of war that really fascinates me. Back in the GC Guilliman though beyond taking a world, but also how to manage and sustain it.

This is why I like your library idea. Think beyond war. The needs of mankind are far more numerous than a mere Bolter can manage. Trust me, if the Administratum was run by the UM, things would be far less stupid :D

And never forget: Courage and Honour.
