Sculpting a Great Unclean One [Image Heavy]

So, when Dark Imperium was announced Grandfather Nurgle spoke to me and commanded me to craft him a champion worthy of the battlefield.

And with Super Sculpey and what greenstuff I had in my possession, I began my labours. I stalled for a month or so while work got busy, and now am waiting on a new shipment of putty of various forms, but I thought I would post what I'd done so far to help keep me motivated and have you all put a boot in my backside should I slack off.

Fair warning, these pictures were taken on my smartphone as I have no camera, and I wasn't exactly keeping up with taking photos as I went.

So here we have the earliest picture I have of him. I started with an armature of aluminum foil in the rough shape that I wanted, covered that in Super Sculpey and baked it until solid. After that I began work by greenstuffing on basic hooves for his feet (which will get a polish later) and started on blocking out the vertebrae for his spine/tail

Next I did some work on the upper part of his face. I decided on a trio of eyes because good things come in threes, plus the implication of the third eye amused me somewhat. I decided his nose was going to be very short, a bit like Jabba the Hutt's own snozz, and to finish it off I added a massive boil to the side of his face.

Inspired by this image of a GUO I began sculpting an inner mouth for him, complete with fangs. At the same time, I put some work into his right armpit, giving it a lovely pockmarked look alongside two more boils (one of which has burst)

You can also see where I started to work on his back in this next pic.

He's a lot further along than this, but I don't want to put too many pics in a single post, so I'll stop here for now and put some more up later. I'd love to hear suggestions, but I've done a fair bit of work on him already and some suggestions may not be feasible. I hope you enjoyed this little snippet of my first foray into sculpting a model from scratch ^^

I use super sculpy a lot and its great to work with. You should try sculpy firm which holds detail really well and is a lot easier to see where you're working that the normal SS, the only downside is you'll break your fingers trying to warm it up and make it usable. You can mix the two together to get a nice blend of workable and easy to see where you're adding details.

Looking good!

I've yet to be brave enough to try sculpting my own model 100% from scratch, so seeing this from the beginning is very motivational. Love the sculpy base, for some reason - reminds me of cookie monster with his mouth and head that way. Weird, I know.

Any chance to see an image showing the scale of the model?

Here's the next set of pics~

In this shot we can see my first effort at giving him a horn, I rolled a tube of greenstuff out and twisted it to give a unicorn-esque appearance. You can also see I've layered on some milliput over the sculpey on his back, this is because the shoulder region was far too slender and made his rouunded stomach too large for the rest of him. You can also see where I've put a bridge over his nose holes to give him a little bit of nose.

This shot is after I had done away with the unicorn horn and gave him a face blade of milliput which looks much better. You can also see the work I've done around his shoulder and the back of his neck, including a protruding horn, a reallly bad shot of his triple tumours on the left arm, and peeking out at the back is his fungal 'chimneys'

You can also see the internal organs being sculpted on his belly down there.

Another angle of the shoulder, the camera is not kind to the folds of his skin... you can also see a little of the warty texture to his neck. This was achieved by mixing couscous into the greenstuff. It's a technique I've used more heavily on his backside and the right side of his body.

Now, the next images will be of aforementioned backside. Please be warned, the spoiler below contains images that are not safe for anywhere, especially not work. I repeat, giant daemon butt incoming!

There's a few more older pics to go, and then I can start with taking pics of his current state. I now realise I should have taken way more 'step by step' style pictures if I was going to do something like this, but oh well, you live and learn.

I noticed that super sculpey was a little too soft for much detailing, it's why I just used it to form a base for this project and then pile greenstuff on top of that. I'll look into sculpey firm in the future ^^

I didn't expect this to motivate others to do something like it, but if it does I'm really glad! The project has been really fun so far, and I'm learning a lot about using greenstuff as I go.

He does look a bit silly with the sculpey head as a base, I laughed to myself a fair few times as I was working on him. The stupid looking mouth has been very useful though (and looks way less stupid now) because it's given me room to sculpt the inside of the mouth without pushing his face further out to make room for it.

As for scale... I'm hitting myself for not taking a pic to show it earlier. When I take new pics I'll definitely get some shots for scale, but I still have to burn through a number of older shots first and I don't want to spoil the surprise of what's coming.

I've Mixed the two using a pasta maker but they recently launched a mix of their own which is kind of a 50/50 mix anyway. I've not tried it as I have a load of both anyway. I've also used both on sculptures before by using the normal for some areas and then using firm for detail areas like here: blog link
