It has come to the Commissariat's attention that some of you have not being keeping up with your regular training requirements. As such we intend to rectify this immediately by commencing an intensive re-education of the command corps. Failure will not be tolerated!

This will be a weekly series of threads aimed at discussing the units available to the Astra Miliatrum in 8th edition. This can become a resource for those finding their feet in 8th and our brothers in arms who have joined the fight in the glorious Imperial Guard.

Most Guardsmen are too busy claiming ground from the enemies of the Emperor to be concerned about the heavens above them.
Thanks to the Hydra, they don't have to!
Let's see what makes these anti aircraft platforms tick.

In 7th edition I think I only came across these when people had to take them as a tax for the Steel Host Formation.
This edition though their effectiveness has increased dramatically. Now dealing out 8 S7, AP-1, D:2 shots on a 3+ to hit against anything with the FLY keyword! Means not only are they great at clearing the sky of pesky enemy flyers, they can also deal a fair degree of damage to Tau battlesuits and Eldar bikes.
At ~115pts they're not a bad inclusion to a take all comers list.

So who's been taking advantage of the +1 to hit FLY with the firepower of the Hydra? I came up against a Storm Raven the other day and did not have a serious answer for it and it certainly laid down some pain. I may have to convert one of my Wyvrens for my next event!

Pretty much, fortunately they're much improved against last edition! Admittedly they couldnt really get worse...

Interestingly enough from how I read the rules flyers also suffer the -1 to hit against other flyers.

As the Vendetta used to also be a good source of AA.

There are the FW air superiority flyers though.

The improvement is welcome, a fair few units have the Fly keyword so that +1 to hit will be quite useful. That said most of them don't have two or more wounds so the autocannon stats might get wasted a bit. I'm considering them for larger point games where I'm more likely to find better targets so I'll be interested to hear what people think and have experienced
