I am newly subscribed to B&C, although I have been a guest reader for several years.

I am starting my first Primaris based army and wanted to reach out to the Raven Guard community for some assistance.

I am painting my army as the Death Spectres Chapter. I have the standard color scheme down (i.e. intercessors), however I am having some difficulty finding information on how to paint the more specialized/command units. I have never played a Raven Guard army before, having primarily played SW and BA exclusively.

Can anyone offer any resources that would describe how to paint/differentiate the various specialists and/or command units? Specifically, how would Death Spectres identify Sergeants, Veterans, Veteran Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, and units such as Inceptors, Hellblasters and Reivers.

I would also be interested to hear anyone's opinions or ideas relevant to this topic.

Thank you in advance.

-Bob

I can hardly add anything to the topic except: They are your Dudes, paint them how you like them. But I guess you know that already. I personally don't like the Raven Guard's white Arms and Helmets. You can hardly say: Oh, we paint our armour black, because stealth and such, and then paint 1/3rd of it white. Plus, I think the Terminators look much more badass in pure black. But that's my opinion.

The reason I comment here, is, I am curious: What made you leave you Wolves and Angels behind an switch to the Raven Guard?

Welcome to the Ravenspire!

Death Spectres, eh?

For resources, I would start with Lexicanium and Warhammer 40K Wikia.  A Google search for "Death Spectres Chapter" will lead you to those pages.  There is also a YouTube duo that does a "40K Facts" series and they did one for the Death Spectres.  I've watched several of those series and appreciate their research into the topic of choice.  I have not watched the one for this Chapter, but am confident they will have stuff that will help you.

If I had to make decisions then it would go like this:

They are Codex compliant, so follow the Ultramarine method of rank designation:

* Red helmets for Seargents, Red+white stripe helmets for Vet Sergeants, etc.

* What I would deviate from the Codex, and thus follow their parent Chapter, is to use Company designation on the right shoulder trim only.

* Terminators follow their PA brothers with the white (bone?) helmet with white right shoulder pad for the Chapter sigil.

* As discussed elsewhere, specialists like Techmarines, Librarians and Apothecaries do not need their whole armor to be red, blue and white respectively.  So here is where you could really show some individuality ^_^

* Vehicles may likely have a section or plate that is white for the Chapter sigil, where the rest is black.

* HQ/Veteran cloaks/capes/tabards would certainly be a dirty white (bone?) in my minds' eye.

All this leads to having a very limited color palate: Black and white/bone.  So, any other colors would be sparse to make that thing stand out (see Specialists note above).

There you go :tu:

But, as was said before, make it yours.  You are the one to put paint on models and look at them more than anyone else.  So, they have to look good to *you* first or foremost.

Share pics yo!

I don't think that's accurate, right? Because the shoulder trim is for company, not role.

But I echo the sentiment of those here - do what you want! I'm personally leaning towards using some of the 30k markings with my Primaris - they're already structured heavily like the Legions, so why not mark them as such.

It's also the only way I can get transfers - FW.

Thank you for all the responses. I enjoy reading a variety of input.

I believe, after considering the information everyone has shared, that I am leaning a bit along the lines Race Bannon suggested. I think that I want the DS to be a bit more Codex compliant than their parent Chapter. That being said, I also want to showcase the base color scheme as much as possible, therefore I think I will use a red stripe to identify sergeants instead of an entire red helmet.

With regards to the veterans however, I am still at a bit of an impasse. The base scheme already incorporates a bone white helmet. To go to a full White helmets seems somewhat underwhelming, although I must admit I don't have a better option at the moment.

Here is a photo of my first test mini using the Death Spectres baseline color scheme, with a stripe on the right knee pad denoting the company color.

Photobucket is not allowing to see pics :(

As for Veterans, I would use the right shoulder pad trim as white.  Alternatively, the squad marking :Elite:  on the pad would show their Veteran status as well :tu:

Perhaps picking an accent color to pair with the Bone White helm to indicate rank is a better route to go as well. Red would be the most common, but you could always go a derivative (Purple for example).

If you want to adhere to the codex you might have to start with a black stripe and then smaller accent stripe on top. Much the way they have a blue helm, white stripe, red accent stripe.

Ok lesson learned, photobucket is a bucket of *%#^....

Hopefully these photos will work better. The sergeant was painted before I posted this topic, so I have not yet updated the paint scheme to reflect his sergeant markings.

Nice work!

Also one of the handy features of the B&C gallery is if you goto the "Options" button there is a selection there for "Share Links" which even give you the BBcode so you can copy and paste them into your posts and have them embedded :) :tu:
