I'm putting together my first Horus Heresy army (literally putting it together - most of it is purchased and still sitting in FW bags!) and I have decided to run pre-Heresy/ loyalist Emperor's Children in an Orbital Assault list.

What concerns me at the minute is that as I look at going from 3-4k I'm aware that I'm likely to face more and more heavy armour and super-heavies and I don't have my own to counter them. I'm aware that this is a problem for OA lists and it might just be that they don't scale well.

I currently have the following in my list for dealing with armour -

  • 1x Primaries Lightning
  • 1x Melta support squad (5-man)
  • 1x Leviathan (dual-CC weapons)
  • 2x Javelin (MM and Cyclone)

Options I'm considering currently -

  • CC and grav equipped Contemptor
  • Sky Slayers with MM
  • Sky Hunters with melts/bombs
  • Sun Killers (8-man Lascannon w/Seige Breaker)

My question is how would you advise dealing with super-heavies/ massed AR14 in an Orbital Assault list?

Thanks!

Machine-Killer veterans are probably my favourite. With combi-meltas/meltaguns, even against armoured ceramite, they're basically short-range lascannons able to be deployed from nasty angles, and if they don't have armoured ceramite (as the overwhelming majority of vehicles will not)...the tank is dead. Another favourite of mine not on your list is a melta-lance armed Leviathan.

Grav-armed Dreadnoiughts of various builds are the most reliable AV you get in an Orbital Assault list, but do not come cheap. Sunkillers are a bad idea here when they're forced to deploy via pod.

How big is said squad in your army?

I have problems to find the right size and take every hint you can give me. :)

I was thinking 10 to get the two melta guns to use after alpha strike

Just ten dudes with 2 Meltas?

Nothing more?

I was thinking about six Veterans with four Combi-Meltas, one regular Melta, Meltabombs and Artificer Armour on the sarge to tank stuff.

That'll be 202 points plus Dreadclaw.

Or should I take an additional Combi-Melta guy, just to be sure?

These are the options I'm thinking of adding. I'll be putting any 2/3 of these into my list as it goes from 3000 to 4000.

Contemptor Dreadnought [320pts]

Dreadnought Chainfist, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon 2x Graviton Gun, Extra Armour

Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod

Contemptor Dreadnought Talon [320pts]

Kheres Pattern Assault Cannons, Dreadnought Chainfist, Graviton Gun, Extra Armour

Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod

Legion Rapier Weapons Battery [90pts]

Laser Destroyer Array, Legion Drop Pod

Legion Terminator Squad [260pts]:

Cataphractii Terminator Armour

Legion Terminator Sergeant: Chainfist, Combi-Melta

4x Legion Terminators: Chainfist, Combi-Melta

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad [185pts]:

Veteran Tactics: Machine Killers

Legion Veteran Sergeant: Combi-Melta

4x Legion Veteran Space Marines: Combi-Melta

Legion Drop Pod

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad [385pts]:

Veteran Tactics: Machine Killers, Melta Bombs, Legion Vexilla

Legion Veteran Sergeant: Artificer Armour, Phoenix Spear, Combi-Melta

7x Legion Veteran Space Marines: Combi-Melta

2x Legion Veteran Space Marines: Meltagun, Power Sword

Legion Drop Pod

Primaris-Lightning Strike Fighter [230pts]:

Battle Servitor Control, Ground-tracking Auguries, 2x Kraken Penetrator Heavy missile

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought [410pts]:

Leviathan Siege Claw, Leviathan Siege Drill, 2x Heavy Flamer, Phosphex Discharger, Armoured Ceramite

Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod

I'm currently tending towards the dual-CC Contemptor plus a 5-man Veteran squad.

I meant with 8 combis too. Just max out the squad to get the 2 meltas so after they unleash the first salvo they still have the 2 meltas. Id prob give them melta bombs too
