Brother Syddraf
Bike painted in Eshin Grey all over, then Dawnstone highlight first then Ulthuan Gray as a point highlight. Has had all over wash with bulb oil. Does it look to grey. Does anyone have any suggestions. Grotsmasha
If you want to darken it, you have two options. Firstly, you can hit it over, and over, and over with Nuln Oil until it's dark enough. Secondly, (and my recommendation) is to grab out Black and neatly paint it between the greys on the most prominent panels. Brother Syddraf
Going to do a thinned out eshin grey next time as a thick edge highlight to see the difference. Also does anyone have a tyre painting scheme. Was thinking Brown's edges over the black and a brown wash. Not doing weathering. Just need a colour difference between the armour and rubber Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339347-advice-on-ravenwing-paint-work/#findComment-4886600 Share on other sites
sneakybamsen
Yea too grey. Ravens are black. Have to agree with dtse here. Not that my bikes are pretty (none of my work is, really), but a solid black is just more true to the Ravenwing. I personally find tyres to be something I do not spend time on painting, as highlights on them will easily come to look quite "unnatural". I also feel they should be black, as that's what tyres normally are coloured, and I don't like weathering. Painting bikes is timeconsuming enough as is, so I try to not make it worse. JJD
I have tried several ways of painting black but this is the method I am happiest with. http://taleofpainters.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/tutorial-how-to-paint-dark-angel.html I still haven't found a way to paint white that I like. Abachrael
I find that too grey for my taste. What I do is Abbadon black, Eshin grey for first highlighting, and Dawnstone for the final touch. It's simple, it's quick, it looks very good, and more specially, it's a scheme that goes VERY well with vehicles (Speeders, Vengeances/Shrouds, Talons/Nephs, etc). And it goes very well with the traditional Ravenwing heraldry.I use the same scheme for all my Ravenwing units and, as usual, having a recognizable and constant theme over a big force makes it look VERY GOOD.I'm not a very good painter, so you take a close look at one of my bikes, and it's "meh" at best for the better painters out there. But you see them all together on their shelves, and they ROCK. dtse
Yea it's crazy how time consuming painting bikes is. Especially detailed ones lokeblack knights. Painting 15 black knights was fricking killer Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339347-advice-on-ravenwing-paint-work/#findComment-4886948 Share on other sites
Chaplain Raeven
Eshin Grey as a base is a bit too grey for Ravenwing. I usually use that as highlight, pared with Fenrisian grey. I painted my tires Dawnstone and washed the heck out of it with Nuln Oil Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339347-advice-on-ravenwing-paint-work/#findComment-4886995 Share on other sites
Ania Redfang
I paint black like this: Abaddon Black over black undercoat. Drybrush Stegadon Scale Green Drybrush Thunderhawk Blue Drybrush Fenrisian Grey Wash Nuln Oil Edge highlight fenrisian grey. I use this for Deathwatch mostly but I think it would look good on any black armour. Gillyfish
Try adding some other colours before deciding whether it's too grey - they will give you a more objective sense of the tone of the model. If it helps, this is what I have done with my bikes. Black undercoat. Drybrush of either charadon granite or adeptus battlegrey Light drybrush of codex grey I then go back and paint chaos black into the centre of the armour panels. It's quick and easy to do and gives thinner highligths than brushing. That said, on the marine, I will paint on highlights rather than drybrush - it helps draw attention to the marine. In terms of tyres - they should be a dark grey/brown. So I generally mix a mid brown colour like the old bestial brown with codex grey and some black to darken it a touch. then take that mix and add more codex grey to paint around the areas where the tyres would catch the light - this helps to give them a curved feel. Weathering can then be added as you like. I'll have to see if I can dig out some of my bikes at some point and provide some pictures. My method speeds up the painting of Ravenwing A LOT! Hertz
Yeah, I spent years trying to find the optimal way to paint ravenwing. Just black and some greys its to "boring" of a surface, and with other colours0 it will just look of. I've "recently"-ish gotten an airbrush to experiment with, and are thinking of doing filters of greens and perhaps reds on the blacker parts, to make it more interesting. Very thin layers, so you dont get the colour, only just so it adds depth to it. Well. Next time I get home I'll get to it.
