Context is important, I know, but I was just wondering what you guys think about when first choosing your elite units at 2000pts.

For context, as soon as I saw the Brotherhood/Paladin Ancient combo with Banner of Refining Flame I was instantly attracted. Now, I am slightly getting swayed toward using just a standard Apothecary with the Soul Glaive.

The reason I first went to the Ancient was mainly for the +1 attack bubble, with added versatility of d6 mortal wounds. +1 attack with Nemesis Falchions just seems so good on paper, but a lot of the time you're really only benefiting one unit at a time. The apothecary can go off by himself, tank damage, deal damage, and regrow his own wounds...

The apothecary also saves roughly 50 points, which is absolutely massive in my opinion.

So, should I test both? Is one just better than the other in your opinion?

I swear by apothecaries myself, though I equip them with hammers. I find it too difficult to keep the banner in play for very long and by himself I don't rate the ancient.

The Apothecary on the other hand can comfortably hang in cc with his Paladin bro's and then either heal himself or them, especially of he has the Cuirass of sacrifice

I like taking a Venerable Dread myself with twin lascannon and missile launcher. Coupled with Astral Aim, it makes an incredibly good backfield objective holder and long range artillery platform. BS 2+ ignoring cover and Line of Sight is fantastic.

Doomglaive has done well for me, so he's staying in my lists.

My Venerable Dreads have been doing well as fire support. I'll most likely end up swapping them for Paladins, but for a backfield drop that still contributes a lot, they work great.

Paladins smoke infantry and the Paragon's hammer slaps vehicles down. They're one of the big draws to taking a Vanguard detachment.

Apothecaries and Ancients I have yet to try out. I've seen them kinda suffer in other lists, because they tend to get left behind in combat.

Purifiers I will try out once my Raven is built.

Nope.

Take an Apothecary with the relic Hanmer or cuirass instead.

My last couple of games I've been using 2 Apothecaries.

My opponents now hate them and think they are the second most op unit (3rd thing) in the codex.

Behind the GMNDK and smite.

As characters they are hard to target. The regen of wounds is amazing. And they simply hit so hard in cc.

Grenades are negligable, but you can surprise with a well placed Krak.
