Stealth Suit army

I am new to Tau forces and am trying to wrap my head around the new edition.  I really want to create a maxed out force of stealth suits with light infantry and some kind of heavy support or fast attack.  Is fielding 12, 18 or even 24 stealth suits possible and would it be a suicide mission?  My heart really wants to hear that this might work, but my head seems to scoff at the idea.

 

Semi- competitive meta.  More beer and pretzel than powergaming, but I still want the list to be reasonably viable.

Is it possible? Sure! Almost every kind of army is possible with the different detachments we have in 8th now.

Will it be good...well...in casual games I guess?

Stealth Suits are essentially still just Marines two wounds, a -1 to-hit modifier at all ranges (even melee), FLY keyword and 4 BS4+ S5 AP0 shots (which you can improve to AP-1 for some points). However they also cost more than twice of a regular Marine.

Aka they are a good bit more durable (not terminator level of durable), still suck in melee and their shooting is okay-ish.

 

Ultimately Stealth Suits are a utility unit. They are great at supporting the rest of the army (denying reserve space for the opponent by infiltration, placing a homing beacon for Fusion Blaster or Flamer Crisis/Commander, soaking up a good amount of shooting).

2x6 with or without Homing Beacon is definitely doable tho. Your meta sounds like mine and I play 2x3 Stealth Suits regularly. Mainly not more because I often invest a lot more points than I'd like to in Breacher+Devilfish, Flamer Crisis+Shield Drones and HRR Broadside+Shield Drones. Just don't expect your Stealth Suits to blow up everything left and right or to shred infantry. Burst Cannons are still bad and ATS only helps a little. ^^

I've had some decent luck with a core of 2x6 teams and a ghostkeel, they are supported buy a hammerhead group lead by Longstrike, pathfinders and some stealth drones. Burst cannons are ok versus light armour units, not so much against heavy armour.

 

If your in a friendly group see if they'll allow a few proxies to test out list ideas before you full commit to the idea. Or just throw caution to the wind and play what you want and figure out the tactics as you go.
